"Be On Time Chronicles" 12/20/17

I talk and write so much about the difficulties with para-transit service, but I also need to mention when the service works well. For two Saturdays in December I volunteered to work the will call desk for Chorus Austin - first for their "On A Winter's Eve," holiday concert, and then for the "Sing it Yourself Messiah." In both cases I needed a manicure before I handed tickets to concert goers. Nail polish does not stay on my fingernails long, because I often use the nails and tips of my fingers to open things.

On both Saturdays I went to Walmart before heading to the church. A few nail salons operate near my apartment, but I chose the one inside Walmart because I knew I could get food and use a restroom there if I needed to. In both cases, my rides worked out very well. On the first Saturday, I was finished with the manicure early enough to jog across the parking lot to Panera and have a hearty bowl of turkey chili before my ride arrived. The second Saturday was colder and a little wet, so I stayed inside Walmart and bought the holiday cards I needed. I had food with me, so I didn't buy any, but I eyed a turkey wrap that looked tasty.

On both weekends, I didn't have to wait long for my connecting ride to the church, and I was transported directly to my destination. I was thirty minutes early in each instance, but that was okay. The church was open, singers were arriving for their call time, and other volunteers were setting up for the concerts. On both Saturdays I received compliments on my manicure and coordinating sweater. I was festive and giddy with the spirit of the holiday season, and a feeling of satisfaction that my schedule had been successful not just once, but twice!

It feels so wonderful when transportation works well for me. That doesn't happen very often, unfortunately. It is especially helpful that there are other places I could have walked to near Walmart if I had time. There are various eateries besides Panera in that shopping complex, including a Middle Eastern and a New Orleans-style restaurant. There's also another nail salon, a hair salon, and a frozen yogurt establishment. Maybe one day I'll take a day and get my hair cut, my nails polished, have a nice meal, and do a little shopping, all in one para-transit excursion. Getting the timing right would take some planning, but I'm up for the challenge!

What to do when you feel like shit (article)

Fifteen Easy Things You Can Do to Help When You Feel Like Shit

http://www.filmsforaction.org/articles/15-easy-things-you-can-do-to-help-when-you-feel-like-shit/

1) Get a drink of water
2) Make your bed
3) Take a shower
4) Have a snack - not junk food!
5) Take a walk
6) Change your clothes
7) Change your environment
8) Talk to someone - not on the Internet - it can be about anything
9) Dance to an upbeat guilty pleasure song
10) Get some exercise
11) Accomplish something - even if it's something tiny
12) Hug an animal
13) Make a "done" list instead of a "to-do list"
14) Watch a YouTube video that always makes you laugh
15) Give yourself permission to feel shitty

End of list

My comments:
I've only posted the main ideas here - read the article for more information. I am a big proponent of all of these - I have done them all at some point, and they all help. When you feel bad, for whatever reason - short-term illness, chronic illness, depression, anxiety - having the motivation to implement any of these activities can be a daunting task. But hopefully it will help to know that all of these possess the power to make you feel better, at least for awhile.

Here are a few other ideas that have worked for me:
1) Do something for someone
If you can get out of the house, volunteer somewhere, offer to babysit, house sit, dog sit, etc. If you can't get out of the house, or aren't able to volunteer on a regular basis, then consider being a pen pal, a mentor, someone who checks in on someone else, etc. Use pen and paper, telephone, or the Internet to communicate and focus on someone else, instead of ruminating on yourself and your problems.
2) Practice mindfulness
The basic principle of mindfulness is to live in the moment, not thinking about the future or the past. Live just for today. Sometimes when I'm having a particularly bad day, I don't think about the entire day, because it seems too overwhelming. So I say to myself, "Just get through the next hour (half hour, minute, etc)" I remind myself that I have felt this bad before, and it always gets better. In fact, that should be it's own bullet point:
3) Remind yourself that IT ALWAYS GETS BETTER. How you are feeling at one particular moment of the day does not mean that you will always feel that way. Feelings are transient. Moods are transient. Physical and emotional pain are transient. They come and go, ebb and flow, rise and fall.
4) Don't forget to breathe. Pain and anxiety can cause you to hold your breath or breathe shallowly, which can exacerbate the symptoms you already have. You don't have to necessarily take a lot of deep breaths or learn any kind of technique, although being aware of your breath through meditation or yoga can definitely be helpful. Also look into relaxation exercises. When I'm tired, anxious, and/or stressed, I often hunch my shoulders and clench my legs, which can contribute to my pain, fatigue, and anxiety.
5) Don't compare yourself or your life to anyone else's.
I am a big fan of social media, but it can definitely have it's drawbacks. If you are feeling bad about your life, it might be time for a break from Facebook, or at least a mini vacation. Instead of spending hours there, just check in a few times a day, and if reading posts makes you feel frustrated and sad about your life, close the application, and do something else. Understand this: Facebook can make everyone's life appear better / happier / more successful than yours. That is a fallacy. Sure, some people do have great lives. But everyone has problems. EVERYONE.
6) Find something to focus on.
I understand how hard that can be when you are in physical or emotional pain, or suffering from fatigue. But having a hobby or interest can take your mind away from how you're feeling. Anything is better than ruminating. Play a game, binge watch a show, read a book, get lost in YouTube, journal, cook or bake something, etc. Many times I have been anxious, tired, worried, etc, and when I've been able to focus on something, I'll suddenly realize that time has passed and I'm feeling a lot better.
7) Organize
This is a big one for me. I feel much better when I'm organized and my surroundings are less cluttered. If I'm feeling bad or anxious, cleaning or organizing something can really help. I'm also a list maker. Getting thoughts out of my head and down on paper or in an app helps me tremendously, especially when I'm very busy, preparing to travel, etc.
8) Practice gratefulness
Every negative aspect of your life can be turned into a reason for gratitude. Negativity is a choice, and so is positivity. The person who has to work three jobs to make ends meet has two choices. He can grumble and say, "Its not fair that I have to work so hard and other people hardly work at all and have plenty of money." Or he can say, "I'm thankful that I'm strong enough to work so hard, and that I have a roof over my head and food to eat." The harried mother can say, "All I do is cook and clean and no one appreciates me" or she can think to herself, "I'm happy to be able to take care of my family and make sure they are fed and have clean clothes." It's true, life isn't fair. Some people do have it easier than others. Comparing your life to others will never make you happy. Finding contentment with your existence, while always striving to improve your situation, will be the key to your success.

Hashimoto's Disease

I have this, but my levels aren't to the point where I need medication yet, according to my doctor. I have many of these symptoms, but I also have other conditions, such as an inner ear disorder, that can cause some of these symptoms. Anyway, this article describes me well, unfortunately. Not completely, but I definitely can relate. Like the author, I keep going as best I can. Every day.

I'll be seeing my doctor in January. Maybe it's time for medication, and maybe it will make a difference in my life.

The Vicious Cycle of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Most people who are close to me now know of my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diagnosis. People ask me how it’s treated, to which I respond, “A pill a day for the rest of my life” – and that’s that.
Your thyroid is a gland in your neck responsible for major bodily function from head to toe. That means this disease has been affecting me from head to toe.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is my immune system attacking my thyroid gland, thinking it is an invader. This has lead to hypothyroidism which means those attacks on my thyroid have now caused damage. This results in my thyroid’s failure to function properly and produce thyroid hormone. Everything in my body is negatively impacted like metabolism, energy, bowel movements, emotions, skin, hair, nails, memory, concentration, muscles, joints, menstruation, and the list goes on.

Compare it to a bicycle. The person going uphill with fully pumped tires will have much better success than the other person who has flat tires, or even worse, no tires. Individuals diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or hypothyroidism have an internal “bicycle” which is the latter; a bicycle with deflating tires, losing more and more air the further it goes.

Now that I’ve experienced the “highs” from being on prescribed medication for two months, to the “lows” of no medication, which is the way I have been feeling for two years now – I realized I had actually felt close to normal. Everything I had been feeling wasn’t just in my head.

I thought I was just an exhausted adult, and referred to my bouts of depression, anxiety and exhaustion as my “bad brain days.” Putting on the show is the most draining part. Having to smile, converse, be alert and be social is so tiring when I actually feel so fake because I just want to be at home in bed sleeping, or rather, trying to sleep.

August 2017 was when my family doctor diagnosed me with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. After thoroughly researching the thyroid system and how it works, I finally had an explanation as to why I felt so messed up inside. I know most probably haven’t taken a moment to read into it, or open the various links I’ve sent trying to help them understand. And I totally get that. But that’s why I felt this was fitting, so people can finally somewhat get this.

As I’ve said, Hashi’s affects me from head to toe.

The emotional aspect is the hardest. I go from numb, to irritated, to angry, to sad, to annoyed, to guilty, to embarrassed, and then back to numb, all day every day. Then there’s the forgetfulness, mumbling and lack of concentration. People often look at me with questioning looks. On days when I can’t tolerate myself, how am I expected to tolerate society?

Then there’s the physical effects which can be just as traumatizing. The dry skin around my face constantly making me look sick and unhealthy. Dry and brittle hair. Fragile dry nails. A body temperature of the arctic. Not being able to fall asleep, and not being able to stay asleep once I finally do. Completing four or five tasks which exhaust me within two hours, encouraging napping by early afternoon. Nausea creeping up at the most uncomfortable timing, while bowels aren’t cooperating either. And not to mention the menstrual issues. The list goes on.

When I decline an outing, it’s not because I don’t want to go, it’s because I’m not mentally and physically prepared to leave the emotional safety that my home provides me. I wish I could do the “normal people things” as easily as others, but most days I just can’t.

It’s a vicious cycle in every way; my mental health is affected by my physical health and vice versa. Hashi’s creates such a feeling of isolation and I don’t think anyone really gets it, myself included.
Everyday is a battle between my head, heart, and well, my immune system. I do want to help myself and heal myself, but this is so huge and new to me. I don’t even know where to begin.

Think about your last cold, and how icky you felt all week. Think about your anxiety sitting on a roller coaster waiting for it to start. Think about how you felt trying to fit in first week of high school. Think about your last morning after a horrible sleep. Think about the guilt you felt last time you let someone down. These are the things I feel every day, and they just spring up on me with no just cause. Sure there are times when smiles and laughs distract me from the negatives, but that general feeling of just not being well is always lingering. Think about those two cyclists from the beginning of this, and how different they are going to feel, both mentally and physically, after their own journeys up that hill.

I may look OK (makeup does wonders), but the things going on inside my body and head are a whole other world that I’m just finally exposing to others, and exploring more of for myself.

All I want from friends and family is their patience, empathy, understanding and unconditional love. I just need you to listen, give me space when needed, but be close when things get rough. Don’t take things I say or do personally. Try to understand how I’m feeling. Know that what I say isn’t being “over dramatic,” ‘”paranoid” or “lazy.” What may not seem real for you is complete reality to me. Hashimoto’s is real, and does make a difference to quality of life. All I ask, is you try to understand it with me.

Word of the Day: Hope

Hope goes hand in hand with other important words to me, like resiliency and motivation. If you aren't motivated and resilient, then you can often feel hopeless, or less hopeful.

I was especially thinking about hope on Tuesday night, when Democrat Doug Jones defeated Roy Moore in the race for the Senate seat from Alabama that was vacated by now Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Alabama hasn't had a Democratic Senator in 25 years. The state is typically very red. But the fact that the Republicans were trying to push through an admitted racist and bigot, and accused child predator, combined with the failing policies of our current President, has turned the state blue, at least for the Senate. It has been a strong defeat for Trump and the Republicans, and a big boost to the Democrats. There was a lot of hope on Tuesday night. Much rejoicing and excitement.

But the good feelings are tempered by the fact that Jones barely won. It was an extremely close race, much tighter than it should have been, considering who was running. In fact, at the time I am writing this, on Thursday morning, Roy Moore has yet to concede. He's attempting to contest Jones' win. Also, there is talk that Republicans, and Trump, will try to push through important legislation, including the terrible tax bill, before Jones can be sworn in, to make sure his vote won't count. Just like when the Republicans refused to even give a hearing to President Obama's choice for the Supreme Court. They stalled for so long that it was President Trump who was ultimately allowed to seat a new Supreme Court Justice.

So hope is usually balanced by reality. But hope is still a vital part of one's life, one's psyche. You have to have hope; you have to believe that bad times are fleeting, you have to understand that improvement is not only possible, but probable. And you have to use the hope you cultivate and nurture within you to make that success happen. Have faith in what you want, fight for it, and attain it.

Word of the Day: Festive

First, an update on motivation from yesterday:

1) I made the chili.
2) I worked on cleaning out the closet, but I didn't finish the project (it's a big one).
3) I read an audio book while I waited for my afternoon ride (nearly 30 minutes) and on the way home (about 45 minutes).
4) I took my medicines for the day.
5) I got my clothes and food ready for today early and didn't wait until closer to bedtime, when I'm tired and sometimes feeling rushed.

And now on to today:

FESTIVE!
Happy Hanukkah everybody!

Tonight begins the eight night Festival of Lights.
My menorah and candles are ready at home.
I am attaching a picture of my small display at work.

I am excited to give gifts to my family and friends this season.
It's going to be fun!

I hope everyone is feeling the holiday spirit this year.

Word of the Day: Motivation

A new week, and a new theme for the blog: Word of the Day.

I know I won't have time for this every day.
But I'll write when I can.
And I'm still planning to resume the 30 Day Writing Challenge too.
I think I'll have more time when I'm on vacation.

Anyway...

The word of the day is motivation.
Ways I've been motivated so far today:
1) I pushed past my fatigue and immediately put in my earbuds when I got in the van. I listened to an audio book on the way to work. I didn't give up, even when the driver and other passengers were talking. I paused the audio book a few times and waited for them to finish their conversations. They didn't talk much today. The driver was concentrating on the traffic. And one of the passengers fell asleep fairly quickly. The other passenger didn't sing out loud as much as she often does, so I was able to concentrate. My morning commute lasted more than 90 minutes today.

2) It has been a successful work day so far. I have completed a number of requests and mailed about ten packets.

3) I have been eating and drinking consistently in an effort to combat the fatigue.

My goals for the rest of the day:
1) Put my earbuds in before I leave my desk so I can listen to the audio book while I'm waiting for my ride, and on the way home.

2) Make chili for dinner

3) Clean out / organize the bottom of the hall closet. It is a mess of paper bags, party bags, tissue paper, and wrapping paper. Part of my motivation is I'm looking for birthday wrapping paper. The other part is I just want to organize that stuff. If I know what I have and where it is, I'll be more likely to use it, not waste it, and not buy more, thinking I don't have what I need at home.

Fatigue, illness, anxiety, depression are impediments to motivation.
Motivation is a key component of success.
When you are motivated, success is more likely.

Illness

During the past few days as I've battled a virus and bad cough, I've tried to live in the moment and be mindful. Instead of being frustrated and upset and scared, as I usually am when dealing with a cough, I have endeavored to stay positive and remember, "This too shall pass." I want to focus on the good instead of the bad:

I have medicine and cough drops to combat the symptoms.
I have hot tea with honey to soothe my throat.
I have a cozy bed with plenty of warm blankets.
I still have the ability to cough, even though its difficult.
I have so far avoided pneumonia.
I have sick leave at work, and understanding supervisors.
I use a machine to aid my respiratory muscles and help me feel rested even when the nights are rough.
I have a roof over my head and shelter from the cold and rain.

Being sick is tough. It's a natural reaction to get depressed and feel like you're never going to get well. But I will. And a resilient attitude can help.

"Be on Time Chronicles" 12/1/17

Sometimes when I get in the vehicle in the morning I'm just too tired to read or listen to music or try to write in my journal. I hate sitting there and doing nothing, vaguely watching cars and dwellings and businesses roll by. I want to be productive in some way during these often long commutes.

Today I was tired, but I made the effort to put my headphones on, adjust the volume on my phone, and tap into the audio book I'm reading. And for about five minutes, it was nice. My ear buds were in and comfortable, the volume was at a good setting, and I was able to concentrate on the story. Success! I wasn't wasting time. I was doing something. Something that I enjoy.

The brief contentment was interrupted by a passenger boarding the bus, and an immediate conversation ensued between her and the driver. A rather loud, boisterous interaction. Two apparently morning-type personalities, cheerfully talking over the noise of the short bus engine and the heater. The perfect volume of my audio book became a muffled, often incoherent voice, but I struggled to pay attention. I knew it was going to be a long ride, and I didn't want to give up on my activity.

And then we picked up another client. I don't know her name, but I ride with her a few times a week now, since she lives in a nearby apartment complex. I'll give her the nickname "Christmas Music Girl." Because for at least the past two weeks, every single time we pick her up, she immediately opens her phone and starts playing Christmas music. Without asking permission from the driver. Without asking the other passengers if they want to listen to Christmas music. And of course without offering or thinking to use headphones.

Radios were taken out of the Metro Access vehicles years ago, evidently because one or more clients complained about music or talk radio stations that were played by the drivers. I detested having to listen to Rush Limbaugh on some afternoons, but I wasn't one of the complainers. Other clients have asked to play music on their phones or portable devices, and the drivers have told them they need to wear headphones. No driver has told Christmas Music Girl to put on headphones. Because who would object to Christmas music, right? Everyone loves Christmas music!

So I had to abandon the audio book. I opened my Spotify app and revved up my "Empowerment Playlist." I managed to listen during the remainder of the journey, even though Natasha Beddingfield's "Unwritten" and Sara Bareillis' "Brave" had a tough time competing with "Feliz Navidad" and the  Chipmunk's Christmas song, whatever the hell it's called.

I don't hate Christmas music. And I'm not always a Grinch during this time of year. I just want people to be respectful of others - of people's time, feelings, interests, etc.

Don't assume that everyone likes a genre of music.

Ask.

Be understanding if you don't get the answer you hoped for.

Plan ahead.

Bring headphones.

And use them!

Happy Holidays! 😇

Dancing with the Stars Season 25 Finale recap - 11/20/17

We have reached the finals of Season 25 dance fans! I'm sorry some of my recaps have been so late. I appreciate everyone who reads them. Here we go!

Round One: Redemption Dances

Drew Scott & Emma
Paso Doble
I thought his Paso the first time was decent, at least for him, so... But this one was better. Improved frame, shaping, footwork. He had attack and determination. He tried his best to play the part. And Emma is so amazing; she makes him look like a better dancer than he is. Drew knows he's the weak link in the Final Four; he doesn't need anyone to tell him that. I think he did his best, and I'm proud of him for that.
Bruno: "proud of you, makeover worked"
Carrie Ann: "your best dance"
Len: "finesse, quality and control"
Julianne: "confident, peace, easy, most improved"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Foxtrot
I love Frankie, AND I have to say that I personally enjoy boy band-wanna be Frankie more than this Fred Astaire-wanna be Frankie. I can't find fault with the performance really. He was dashing and smiling and showed a lot of personality. He danced big and they covered the floor and his partnering skills were good, even though Witney was taller than him, with her heels and big hair. His frame and posture seemed good. It was a very strong performance. I just wasn't over the moon about it. I would have wanted him to re-do another routine, but I have to remember that this wasn't his choice. The judges pick the redemption dances.
Carrie Ann: "full transformation - form, shape, confidence, freedom
Len: "more accomplished, polished"
Julianne: "transported back to the Golden Age of Hollywood"
Bruno: "Mr. Blue Eyes, flair and confidence, stylish and effective"
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 9, 10, 9

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Charleston
Jordan is in it to win it! Holy cow that was a Tour de Force Charleston! They attacked this dance with the same lightning precision and enthusiasm that they did with the Jive last week. Amazing speed, fantastic personality and musicality, exciting tricks. This dance had it all. The crowd behind them only made the dance more electric. Jordan is in a class by himself this season, truly. I am so impressed. It was an odd choice of music for a Charleston, but it worked for them. They are young, so energetic and so focused. The song put a new spin on an old dance style. I loved it!!
Len: "I saw so much, so full on, so full of energy"
Julianne: "When I watch you, I become a fan"
Bruno: "You two are perfectly in tune, extraordinary"
Carrie Ann: "You continue to push yourself"
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Quickstep
I said Jordan is in a class by himself, but Lindsey is nipping at his heels. That was a fantastic Quickstep. It had the old Hollywood feel of a Frankie's Foxtrot, but Lindsey showed even more personality, pizzaz. and showmanship. The music fit perfectly with the dance, and Lindsey always has amazing musicality. For all of Mark's creativity, this was a proper, by-the-books Quickstep. Nearly all of the dance was in hold, which Len should love. It was outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Julianne: "nailed the posture"
Bruno: "criminally good, silk smooth, elegant, fantastic"
Carrie Ann: "new strength, most improved"
Len: "no fiddlin' about, maintained control, awesome"
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10

Round Two: Freestyle!

Definitely the freestyle is my favorite round on "Dancing with the Stars." And usually the best and most popular freestyle will result in a mirrorball victory.

Drew Scott & Emma
That was a super fun routine! It was busy, but it was also stylish and quirky. It was very Drew and Emma. It felt like part of musical. I was very impressed by Drew's musicality. And those lifts and tricks - WOW! They were so daring, but they actually executed them very well, and I was as nervous as I thought I'd be. Drew was the star of this dance, which was so nice to see. He did NOT look like a weak link in this performance!
Len: "You have become a hot property"
Julianne: "exactly what a freestyle should be"
Bruno: "exceeded all expectations, made the number yours"
Carrie Ann: "crowd pleaser, but you weren't in sync"
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 10, 10, 10

Frankie Muniz & Witney
It was a very strong, very powerful routine, but again, I would have preferred boy band Frankie. That is the Frankie that I enjoy most. He and Witney were definitely front and center during the performance, but Witney is such a dynamic performer that I thought Frankie did not get to shine as much as he could have, and should have. They did a lot of dancing together - nothing wrong with that - but Frankie should have had more solo moments, and maybe he should have worn a different color. He needed to stand out more. He got a little lost.
Julianne: "You didn't play it safe, you took a risk"
Bruno: "awesome, moody and menacing, Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation"
Carrie Ann: "really happy you made this choice, but you lost a little steam"
Len: "You gave it your all"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 10, 10

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
What a showstopper!
This routine had everything but the kitchen sink!
Jordan is so light on his feet and has so much musicality in him; he made this routine look effortless. I especially loved that he was front and center pretty much the entire time. No one stole his spotlight. Lindsay was even in the background sometimes. This routine reminded me of Riker and Allison's freestyle. But I was rather disappointed in that one because I wanted a rocker, youthful vibe from them. This was old Hollywood / Bob Fosse musical vibe, but with youth, energy, and so much creativity. Kudos to you, Lindsay! It was an amazing performance. They nailed it, and Jordan didn't drop anything!
Bruno: "sensational, show stopping, star power, superstar"
Carrie Ann: "never cease to amaze me"
Len: "cracker jack of a number, I loved it, brilliant"
Julianne: "everything but the kitchen sink (I said it first, Julianne!) :)
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
This was one of the most creative freestyles we have ever seen, and it was tailor made for Lindsey! The majority of the dance was just her and Mark, which is unusual for a freestyle. The big lift, spin was incredible!! I don't know how in the world she was able to stay on her feet after that. That takes skill! It was a figure skater kind of spin. And something else that takes mad skill: dancing and doing lifts WHILE you're playing the violin! That was absolutely phenomenal. This was not my favorite freestyle, but I am very impressed, and I can appreciate what an amazingly difficult and complex routine this was. This will be a freestyle that people will talk about for awhile, and that's what you want a freestyle to be. Fantastic! And like Jordan, Lindsey was the absolute star of this dance.
Carrie Ann: "girl, you represent! Best showcase of your talent"
Len: "War on the floor, fantastic competition"
Julianne: "masterpiece of awesomeness"
Bruno: "modern classic extravaganza, Brava!"
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10

Elimination:
Drew & Emma left the ballroom. Sad, but it was the right decision. He should be very proud of making it to the finals.

Dancing with the Stars Semi-Finals Part Two recap 11/13/17

Part Two: Iconic Dances
For what it's worth, I don't usually care for this round of "Dancing with the Stars." Iconic dances are iconic for a reason: They were so spectacular that they shouldn't be recreated, because the recreation hardly ever lives up or exceeds the original dance. Anyway, here we go...

Drew Scott & Emma
Recreating Corbin Bleu & Karina's Jazz routine
That move was WAY too hard for Drew - SO RISKY! Emma was crazy to try it, and she's so lucky she didn't get hurt. They pulled it off, but barely. I was cringing and SO nervous! Honestly, I was not a fan of this routine. The timing seemed really off. The music was too fast; I don't feel like the dancers kept up with the pace. It was a big production number but it felt sluggish, not enough pizzaz. And I thought the costume was all wrong for Drew; the color was bad on him. Blah.
Len: "great imagination, but work on finesse"
Bruno: "captured the spirit of the dance, but timing and sharpness were off"
Carrie Ann: "naturally high expectations - you went for it, but the lifts were a bit sloppy, and I was scared. Never do that lift again" (AMEN Carrie Ann!)
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Victoria Arlen & Val
Recreating Amber Riley & Derek's Charleston routine
It took them FOREVER to start dancing, but once they did, it was a very strong routine. Victoria was the most relaxed I've ever seen her; she was even singing along as she danced. The music was more suited to Amber, but Victoria coped very well with it, and showed a lot of personality and charisma as well as proper Charleston elements. Great job Victoria! This was one of your best dances! The audience loved it.
Bruno: "acting was right on the money - charm, wit, timing were spot on"
Carrie Ann: "I forgot about Amber and Derek - this was all yours"
Len: "full of energy; that was a performance"
My score: 9 (almost a 10)
Scores: 9, 10, 10

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Recreating Paige VanZant & Mark's Jive routine
Paige and Mark's Jive is in my Top 10 dances of all time on "Dancing with the Stars." I didn't think anyone could recreate it with any degree of success. But holy cow, Jordan and Lindsay totally did!! WOW!!! It was amazeballs! I can't say it was better than the original, but I can say it was just about as spectacular as the original. Jordan and Lindsay were ON FIRE in this performance! So much enthusiasm, so much power, so much attack, so much speed, and with excellent technique! The first time I watched it I thought Jordan's arms flailed a bit at times, but on second viewing I didn't see that at all. It was an incredible dance!!
Carrie Ann: (standing ovation): "marathon of all Jives"
Len: "the yardstick of Jives"
Bruno: "very rarely can a remake top an original, but this one did!"
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Recreating Meryl Davis & Maks' Tango routine
This was a superb dance. Loads of Tango content, and the music fit so well with the choreography. Excellent speed, frame, and lots of time in hold. I didn't love the flashing lights and lasers, but the routine was top notch. Excellent!
Len: "plenty of snap, crackle, and pop - proper Tango"
Bruno: "raised your game tonight"
Carrie Ann: "balanced chemistry - just a few mistakes"
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 9, 10

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Recreating Apollo Anton Ono & Julianne's Paso Doble
They both totally sold that dance, Witney even more than Frankie. Frankie doesn't have the sex appeal, the male charisma of Apollo, but he gave this dance everything he had. He did his best to be strong, fierce, powerful, tough. He's not matador material, but he made a valiant effort. I applaud the attempt.
Bruno: "so macho, so violent, great attitude, work on your shoulders"
Carrie Ann: "stuff in between was only good, but loved the knee slides"
Len: "not enough shaping, but can't beat the spirit"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 8, 9

Elimination:
Victoria & Val left the ballroom. :( I'm sad for her, I know she was devastated, but I hope she feels very proud of herself, because it is truly amazing what she was able to do on the show. In all fairness, it should have been Drew that went home, but as I always say, "Dancing with the Stars" is a popularity contest first and a dance competition second. Talent and dance ability often, but not always, gets contestants to the finale.

Dancing with the Stars Semi-Finals Part One 11/13/17

Round One: Pros pick the songs

Drew Scott & Emma
Tango
The extra dancers were unnecessary, as they usually are. It was a quirky dance, but the music was strange for a Tango. The performance felt messy, clumsy, out of sync, even though I didn't see any major mistakes. It just didn't look or feel clean and precise. The end was fun though (the kilt raising) :)
Len: "so full on you lost your posture and technique"
Bruno: "Tango like no other - too skippy - lost the style of the dance"
Carrie Ann: "lack of artistry, didn't remind me of a Tango"
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Victoria Arlen & Val
Contemporary
So it was a beautiful dance that told the powerful story of her recovery with the help of her loving, supportive parents. Which is wonderful and inspirational. But I feel the same about this routine that I felt about their trio dance with Laurie Hernandez. This performance did NOT showcase Victoria's skills as a dancer, which should be the point of a semi-final dance. It made her look incapable, in need of assistance, etc. In just about every moment of the routine she was either standing still or being lifted, carried, or helped in some way by Val and/or Jenna. Once again, this dance was a disservice to Victoria. It's not a bad idea to tell her life story, but Val needed to showcase her abilities, not make her look like she can barely move on her own. I'm sorry, but on a competitive level, this dance was totally wrong for Victoria in my opinion.
Bruno: "so touching, poignant, positive message
Carrie Ann: "felt the emotion"
Len: "your life story through dance, so poignant and beautiful"
My score: 8
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Argentine Tango
Their routines are so professional-looking. Unfortunately the lights were blinding at times. The one criticism I have of Jordan in this routine is that while his partnering skills were good, I didn't feel like he was in control of the dance. I felt he was a little soft, a little hesitant, he let Lindsay lead him, when he should have led her. But otherwise his technique was excellent. There was a lot of Argentine Tango content and good speed in the dance.
Carrie Ann: "standard extremely high, but I felt a disconnect"
Len: "too big, too concerned with the story, work on the dance"
Bruno: "most mature performance to date, absolutely fabulous"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 10

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Contemporary
Between the darkness and the trash hurtling at them, it was hard to see the routine at times. I thought they had a rough start - their rhythm felt off, Lindsey seemed to have trouble with her timing and foot placement - but then they got back on track, and the dance became a powerful, fiery, exciting, fierce, dramatic, passionate performance. There were lots of lifts and they were throwing each other around - it was a dynamic, forceful, professional-looking contemporary routine. I loved the music too, which was performed by Mark and his wife.
Len: "you blew me away"
Bruno: "dynamic, athletic, surprising"
Carrie Ann: "you have evolved - primal, beautiful, powerful energy"
My score: 9 (the rough beginning kept the dance from being a 10)
Scores: 10, 9, 10

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Salsa
They built up the "no shirt" tease so much that I felt like I was waiting for it the whole routine. In the end, it was a "shirt opening" not a "shirt ripped off," which felt a bit like false advertising. But we got to see his chest and abs. Don't worry, Frankie, your body is good, you looked great! As for the routine - the extra dancers weren't necessary. The song choice was interesting, but for the most part the hip hop song worked for short, white, thirty-something Frankie. He can move! He has swag! I even saw some booty popping. And his bounce was very good, most, but not all, of the time. He seemed to lose a little steam after the unnecessary basketball dunk. But overall it was a high-energy, fun routine, and a real crowd-pleaser.
Bruno: "street cred, loved the originality and spirit"
Carrie Ann: "song didn't necessarily match you, need to stay on the beat"
Len: "so much enthusiasm, but not too much hip hop, not enough hip action"
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 8, 9

Dancing with the Stars recap - Trio Nite - Part 2 - 11/6/17

Part 2: The Trios!

Terrell Owens / Cheryl / Kelly Monaco
Rumba
Someone call the fire department - that was hot!! Caliente! Cheryl is beautiful, Kelly is FINE, and Terrell is indeed sculpted. The costumes were gorgeous on all of them. It was a super sensual, sexy dance with crazy good hip action. A Rumba is hard to do with three dancers, but they managed - and managed quite competently. Did I mention that was a hot number? And Kelly, you definitely still have IT!
Len: "great job, it all came together"
Bruno: "You've got two lovely cherries on your Rumba cake!"
Carrie Ann: "not as challenging as it could have been for you, but very well performed"
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Drew Scott / Emma / Rashad Jennings
Cha Cha
I don't care how well or how badly Drew danced, that was a hella fun routine! James Brown can make anyone a dancer - well, kind of. I think Rashad under-danced so he didn't outshine Drew, because I knew Rashad and Emma could have torn that number up. But I enjoyed the three of them together, and I think Drew tried to be as funky as a tall, gangly, white man with questionable rhythm can manage. The big leap over Emma and Rashad by Drew was impressive. The enjoyment factor was high in this dance.
"Swagtastic!" Tom
Bruno: "glitzy, almost blinded me"
Carrie Ann: "Prince of Soul, You were getting down"
Len: "Everyone contributed to that performance"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 8, 8

Victoria Arlen / Val / Laurie Hernandez
Jive
The dance started out a little slow, but then it kicked into high gear. Laurie did not under-dance, and I think she and Val overshadowed Victoria. It looked like she was struggling to keep up. She should have been the main attraction in that dance, but she wasn't. And the storyline didn't help - Laurie and Val acting as mentor to Victoria, showing her the ropes. It made Victoria look like less of a dancer. This was a poor decision by Val; it's his storyline and choreography. This was an unfortunate routine for Victoria.
Carrie Ann: "acting was the weakest - fell behind"
Len: "needed to be more sharp and clear"
Bruno: "needed more accuracy and precision in the legs"
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Lindsey Stirling / Mark / Kristy Yamaguchi
Jazz
Great routine! Very old Hollywood glamour. All three were evenly matched and danced very well. I can't say there were any spectacular moves in the dance that wowed me, but it was an entertaining routine that I thoroughly enjoyed. The choreography was well paired with the music.
Len: "that was terrific"
Bruno: "classic Hollywood movie star"
Carrie Ann: "pristine and perfect, synergy"
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 9, 9

Frankie Muniz / Witney / Alfonso Rivera
Jive
WOW! This is why I love the trio dances! Perfect dance! They were so in sync it was ridiculous! Lots of Jive content, awesome kicks and flicks, fantastic bounce - They killed it! Wonderful chemistry between the three of them. And Witney was smokin' hot in this number! Tremendous! Their timing was impeccable!
Bruno: "so well-balanced, perfect frame, great performance"
Carrie Ann: "nerves at times"
Len: "full of energy, content, fun"
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Jordan Fisher / Linsday / Corbin Bleu
Salsa
I could write the exact same critique that I did for the previous dance - totally in sync, lots of content, awesome chemistry - plus HOT, sexy, Salsa moves and fun, exciting tricks. This routine had everything I look for in both a Salsa and a trio dance. And I was pleased to see Jordan front and center for part of the dance. Jordan has just the right amount of confidence; he's not cocky. This routine was THE BOMB!
Carrie Ann: "amazeballs, triple fiery emoji!"
Len: "three is perfect"
Bruno: "phenomenal, two bodies, one soul" (I wrote two bodies in my notes, but did he say three?)
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

I was sorry to see Terrell eliminated. It probably should have been Drew. I didn't think Terrell lived up to his own hype as a dancer, but he definitely improved along the way, and he absolutely became an enjoyable performer.

I'll miss his abs. I know I'm not the only one. :)

Dancing with the Stars Recap - Trio Nite - Part 1 - 11/6/17

Trio Nite is one of my favorite nites of the season.
And what a fun idea to bring back former contestants for the trios!

Part I: Individual dances

Terrell Owens & Cheryl
Charleston
It is a fast dance. And I have to say, Terrell has become a good performer! He sold that dance! Big smile, great footwork, I liked the huge hop on to the table, and the giant leap off the table. And he had good partnering work with Cheryl. It was an entertaining and proper Charleston. Great job Terrell!
Len: "trip back to the 20's - no one has improved from week one more than you"
Bruno: "king of the couples club - captured the sense of style, time, and place - Your star is still rising"
Carrie Ann: "so well-toned - peaking at the right moment"
My score: 9
Scores: 9. 9. 9

Drew Scott & Emma
Waltz
The lighting was too bright at times, so it was hard to see him. It was also tough for me to critique Drew because Emma kept my attention during so much of the dance. Her moves were gorgeous. I think Drew did well overall - nice rise and fall, good partnering, mostly decent frame, but not perfect. It was a romantic dance, and their chemistry was evident. Overall a solid routine.
Bruno: "intense, romantic, but needed fluidity"
Carrie Ann: "bottom half of your body not keeping tempo"
Len: "frame was droopy, but I enjoyed the emotional journey"
My score: 8
Scores: 7, 7, 8

Victoria Arlen & Val
Argentine Tango
It seemed like a short routine, with some odd camera angles. Was it just me, or did the camera seem too far away at times? I also was nervous that she would have another spasm. Anyway, I thought she brought the sexy, but the dance could have been even sexier. At times I thought the music was a little too fast for the dance. And they didn't cover the floor. But it was overall good.
Carrie Ann: "you didn't feel comfortable"
Len: "clean and exact"
Bruno: "now you have to act the part, maintain the character through the dance"
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Samba
HOT. SEXY. FIERCE. Great musicality, as always. Great rhythm and bounce. The music and moves were like an African Jazz / Samba fusion. If I'm being honest, though, there could have been more Samba content, and that's why I'm not giving the dance a perfect score. But I enjoyed the intensity. Lindsey is in it to win it!
Len: "not as sure-footed, but full of rhythm and imagination"
Bruno: "like an untamed wild cat"
Carrie Ann: "loved the creativity, but you didn't look as sure"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 8, 9

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Viennese Waltz
It was a proper, beautifully danced Viennese Waltz. The motions were there, the elements of the dance were there. What I didn't feel was emotion, a connection to the dance and to each other. The performance was devoid of chemistry for some reason. It felt like a Viennese Waltz by numbers, like a how-to guide. Move your arm this way. Touch her face here. But it all felt rather robotic too me. Strange.
Bruno: "so stylish, so elegant, but shoulders were rising"
Carrie Ann: "so close to perfection, but almost lost control of Witney"
Len: "far from perfection, no rise and fall, not enough in hold"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 8, 9

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Quickstep
It's hard for me to critique this dance because I was having vertigo from all those moving circles. Oh goodness, Dancing with the Stars, don't do that to me again. I couldn't watch that routine again; it made me so dizzy. Could Jordan and Lindsay see all that? If so, how in the world were they able to dance with all that movement? All I can say is that it looked like a good Quickstep from what I could see.
Carrie Ann: "incredible, brilliant and sassy"
Len gave them a standing ovation. Jordan fell down. :)
Bruno: "technically the most demanding, intricate Quickstep I have ever seen done"
My score: 9 (not a fair score, but I have never failed to give a score on a dance. Evidently it was an amazing dance, but I have to be honest and give a score based on what I was able to see)
Scores: 10, 10, 10

End of Part 1

Dancing with the Stars - Halloween Nite - 10/30/17

More than a week late again - My apologies. Thanks for reading anyway! :)

Part I: Individual dances

Victoria Arlen & Val
Viennese Waltz
Refreshing that it was a proper Viennese Waltz with no gimmicks - no props (other than fog), no extra dancers, no Halloween storyline really. They just danced. And it was lovely. Nice lines, good movement across the floor, romantic. Their tough week paid off.
Len: "super, and a naturalness that was delightful"
Bruno: "so fluid and ethereal"
Carrie Ann: "connection with the story"
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Paso Doble
I understand the storyline with the wolf pack, but I still don't think it's fair that some contestants get big production numbers and some don't. Victoria didn't have a bunch of extra dancers to hide behind, or be improved by. When the extra dancers were in this number, they cluttered the stage and they were distracting. But at the same time, this was a fantastic routine. Hectic at times, yes, but also exhilarating. The assisted lifts / throws were very exciting. It was a thrilling Paso. And Jordan is one of the most professional-looking contestants we've seen on "Dancing with the Stars." He has technique, flair, drama, and outstanding chemistry with Lindsay. I love watching them.
Bruno: "biggest, baddest Paso ever"
Carrie Ann: "aggressive, outside your comfort zone, powerful"
Len: "tricks and treats"
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Nikki Bella & Artem
Jive
The music was entertaining; it was a cute theme, but I thought Nikki was rather weak on the Jive elements. Her kicks and flicks were just okay, her bounce wasn't great, she didn't have much musicality. It was just fair to me.
Carrie Ann: "didn't connect as well to the music"
Len: "lacked a bit of punch, but not a horror story"
Bruno: "few mishaps"
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Vanessa Lachey & Maks
Paso Doble
Too much fog, too many extra dancers, too much bright lighting, too much build up in the beginning. But the rest of the routine was fabulous. It was fast and slow, had plenty of attack and drama, and sensuality. Vanessa played her part very well. I loved the ending, when Vanessa turned her head and Maks and the zombies fell to the ground. That was awesome. A very exciting routine.
Len: "lacking a bit in Paso Doble choreography"
Bruno: "that was a fright fest"
Carrie Ann: "sometimes you lost your balance"
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Terrell Owens & Cheryl
Tango
Terrell's performance of the Halloween aspects of the dance was great - He really got into the character of the dance. His Tango elements, however, get a mixed review from me. His shaping was very good, as was his footwork, but they stayed in place too much for me. It was a little stagnant at times, but overall solid.
Bruno: "super slick with a deadly bite, correct Tango"
Carrie Ann: "don't stop the movements, keep the flow"
Len: "captured the staccato feel"
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 8, 9

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Paso Doble
What rib injury? Not that I don't believe her, but I'm just saying she performed to her usual high standard. The music (her own composition) added to and enhanced the excitement of the dance. It was passionate, bold, fierce, thrilling. Their fall at the end was very dramatic.
Carrie Ann: "you are the beast - that was a very difficult routine"
Len: "you came out with attack and aggression"
Bruno: "so ambitious and intriguing"
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Contemporary
Oooh, that was so deliciously creepy! Frankie made an uncomfortably good stalker! I don't like being scared, but I thought this was an awesome routine! The beginning - when Frankie was "outside" - his movements were so in sync with Witney's! Their dance was high octane - chasing and throwing each other around - it was full of passion and adrenaline. They were both so into it I was afraid they were going to get hurt. Their acting was truly mesmerizing. Outstanding routine!
Len: "fantastic"
Bruno: "truly inspired, dramatic tension, spine tingling good"
Carrie Ann: "you elevated what dance is, the "Dancing with the Stars" Emmy goes to...."
My score: 10

Drew Scott & Emma
Charleston
So I got spoiled on social media before I watched the episode, so I know the fall was not part of the routine. I'm surprised that the judges didn't catch it. It didn't look intentional. But except for the fall it was a solid routine - plenty of Charleston elements and decent partnering skills. Drew is giving it everything he has.
Bruno: "kept up with the change of tempo"
Carrie Ann: "quirky, but it works - one of your best dances"
Len: "you've come back to life"
My score: 8
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Part 2: Team dances
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Team Monster Mash:
Nikki & Artem, Terrell & Cheryl, Jordan & Lindsay, Lindsey & Mark
It was a cute routine, but I wasn't bowled over by it. I didn't understand the costumes. But I thought everyone did well. The couples seemed evenly matched. But I didn't love all the moving scenery. I thought it was just okay. Not spectacular.
Len: "this was a bit messy"
Bruno: lost a lot of sync"
Carrie Ann: "you all under-danced, didn't engage me"
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Team Phantom of the Opera:
Vanessa & Maks, Victoria & Val, Frankie & Witney, Drew & Emma
The "underdog team" did a fantastic job! They were SO in sync! I loved the music and the way they traversed the dance floor. They also seemed pretty evenly matched, but they didn't resort to a bunch of stage props and gimmicks. They just went out there and danced. Great work! A very exciting ending too. And I loved the costumes!
Bruno: "splendid theatrical extravaganza"
Carrie Ann: "best, most exquisite dance ever"
Len: "most polished dance ever"
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Elimination:

I was also spoiled on social media with who got eliminated. I feel bad that the double elimination wasn't revealed until the very end. Vanessa did NOT deserve to go home. I thought she would make it to the finale. I love her personality, and I think she's a very good dancer. Boooo!!!

Five reasons to be grateful on 11/2/17

1) I woke up to the glorious news that the Houston Astros are now World Series champions!

2) Yesterday was a sunny, warm fall day.

3) I made it to work.

4) I volunteered to be a division representative for our annual Holiday Families committee at work. Every year we "adopt" two families and raise money to buy holiday gifts for them. Our fundraisers include a raffle of themed baskets and a book, bake, and craft sale. I usually donate a few dollars every year, but I've never been more involved than that. It feels good to volunteer. My division is creating a Dr. Seuss basket. I'm excited about the cute items I found on Amazon - a mug, travel cup, journals, pens, etc.

5) I had time to watch three shows. I haven't watched anything so far this week because I've been so focused on baseball.

Five reasons to be grateful yesterday

1) I made it to work and had a successful day. I'll likely finish the month with more than 180 requests. My average is 100.

2) I made it to the grocery store, despite transportation issues, and managed to have thirty minutes to shop and pick up my prescriptions.

3) I have food, medicine, and a place to live. I was safe and protected from the heavy evening rain.

4) I achieved my goal of 100 blog posts for the year.

5) The Astros have one more chance to win the World Series.

We probably only get one life.
Decide to be happy.
Choose to be grateful.

Dancing with the Stars recap - Movie Nite - 10/23/17

I'm more than a week behind. I haven't even seen last night's show yet. Hopefully I'll get back on track soon.

Nikki Bella & Artem
Argentine Tango
"Foreign Film"
Sensual, nice leg flicks, but it seemed a bit slow in places, and I think there was a balance issue. But overall a solid routine. She just seemed a little hesitant at times. But yay for Artem's natural hair color! :)
Len: "you have a tenderness about your dancing"
Shania: "so romantic - the language of love"
Bruno: "Argentine Tango with a French touch, elegant, not vulgar"
Carrie Ann: "stunning display of newfound artistry"
Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9
My score: 8

Results already?
Nikki & Artem, Terrell & Cheryl, and Victoria & Val are all in jeopardy.

Drew Scott & Emma
Paso Doble
"Action Movie Hero"
I could tell he was living out his fantasy. And he did a very good job! A Paso needs a lot of attack, and he had that. Normally I would complain about extra dancers, but in this routine he had to have people to fight with. His shapes were good. However, the big spin with Emma was weak and clunky. That would be my only complaint.
Shania: "all the drama was captured"
Bruno: "it was the last hero - but you lost timing"
Carrie Ann: "dance got away from you"
Len: "awkward looking routine, finesse was lacking"
Scores: 7, 7, 9, 7
My score: 9 (Well, at least Shania agreed with me.)

Nick Lachey & Peta
Samba
"Western"
How in the world was that a western, other than the word "west" being a constant lyric in the song? If they thought Drew was awkward, what are they going to say about this routine? Actually, the middle of the dance was decent - he had a bit of rhythm and bounce there. But no musicality in the beginning. I'm sorry Nick. I know how hard you're trying!
Bruno: "post apocalyptic Samba"
Carrie Ann: "nailed the breakdown"
Len: "solo stuff is terrific"
Shania: "lacking confidence, but entertaining"
Scores: 7, 6, 7, 6
My score: 7

Victoria Arlen & Val
Paso Doble
"Sports"
Val said she needed attack, aggression, and strength, and I thought she brought all three. No cutesy Victoria tonight. I loved the song of course, "We Will Rock You," and I even liked the choreography with the extra dancers, which is a rarity for me. She had good speed and great shapes. She looked fierce!
Carrie Ann: "blended the styles, right on par"
Len: "I liked the concept"
Shania: "most innovative hockey game, great athletic energy"
Bruno: "proper Paso"
Scores: 8, 8, 7, 8
My score: 9

Terrell Owens & Cheryl
Jive
"Spy"
The extra dancers were very distracting at times, and so was the spy story - their dancing got interrupted too much. But when they were dancing, Terrell did quite well - nice bounce, strong kicks and flicks, and good musicality. For me, it was his best dance, but I didn't like the stopping and starting. I also have to say, he looked very dapper. :)
Len: "wasn't quite double O heaven, but best dance"
Shania: "determination, in character, attention to detail"
Bruno: "brought down the house, charismatic swagger, becoming a better performer"
Carrie Ann: "smooth operator, hot!"
Scores: 9, 9, 10, 9
My score: 9

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Jazz
"Animated"
The set designers outdid themselves. It was a fun, high energy routine, with a great song to dance to, and Frankie gave it everything he had. I felt a boy band vibe again, which he likes. The extra dancers weren't necessary, but at least Frankie wasn't overshadowed. It was a 60's feel with a hip hop vibe, which was cool.
Shania: "liberated, fancy footwork"
Bruno: "Frozen on acid, psychedelic treat, but lost timing"
Carrie Ann: "entertaining, but with mishaps"
Len: "full of spirit and enthusiasm"
Scores: 7, 8, 8, 8
My score: 9 (I am not in agreement with the judges much in this episode)

Vanessa Lachey & Maks
Quickstep
"Musicals"
A very fast Quickstep! Very musical, very entertaining. Vanessa is a firecracker! She commands the stage, and takes center stage. The chair part was quite un-Quickstep though. Will Len get them on that? Too much out of hold?
Bruno: "theatrical pizzaz - you killed it!"
Carrie Ann: "fantastic performance"
Len: "posture should be better"
Shania: "sass, humor, and class"
(By the way, I didn't realize her skirt ripping off was a wardrobe malfunction until they re-showed it in slow motion. I thought it was part of the routine)
Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9
My score: 9

Jordan & Lindsay
Rumba
"Dramas"
This was a very professional-looking routine with amazeball chemistry. It was both fast and slow at all the right moments. It was endearing. It was romantic. Jordan had the best hip action I've seen in a male contestant on this show, except for maybe Gilles Marini. There was a ton of Rumba content in this routine. It was gorgeous. The end.
Carrie Ann: "like watching taffy, wave of gorgeousness"
Len: "well-crafted, but annoyed by little things" (It's called artistry, Len) :)
Shania: "elegant"
Bruno: "gripping, magnetic storytelling"
Scores: 10, 9, 10, 10
My score: 10

Lindsey & Mark
Argentine Tango
"Sci Fi"
Mark is a creative genius. And Lindsey not only has the most musicality; she's also a very good actress. Her moves were robotic, which was part of the character, but she also had great fluidity for the excellent lifts and tricks. It was an exciting routine, interesting, sensual at times. Something for everyone to enjoy. And like Jordan & Lindsay's performance, it was also a very professional dance.
Len: "choreography was phenomenal, dancing was brilliant"
Shania: "graphic and intense, elegant"
Bruno: "a work of genius, best dance of the season"
Carrie Ann: "upped your game to something phenomenal, you slayed that dance!"
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10
My score: 10

Results:
Nick & Peta were eliminated. :(
We love you Nick!

Houston Astros

I shouldn't call myself a fan. I like sports. I am my mother's daughter. I root for the Texans, the Cowboys, the Rockets, and the Astros. I cheer when the teams win and I'm disappointed when they lose. But I watch too much television. I have too many weekly shows. So I haven't taken the time to be a true sports fan. I haven't sweated and panted and held my breath through every inning, every quarter, every moment of play.

But I'm still a fan. And I just want to say - no matter what happens in LA during the next game (or two) - the Houston Astros are winners - collectively, as a team, and individually, as players. They are champions, whether they win the World Series or not. They have given the fans two thrilling wins at home - more than any Astros team has ever done. And wow has Houston needed something to get excited about.

Game 5 of the 2017 World Series last night showed what this Astros Team is made of. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning - cold bats, a struggling star pitcher - it was looking bad for the orange and blue. But our boys did not give up. They gave their fans a game that will be talked about for years to come. A battle it was. And the Astros were ultimately victorious. Past midnight, in 10 innings, they beat the Dodgers 13-12. What a game! What a series!

They may not win the series. Of course I hope they do. But what they have already given to their city - hope, excitement, the national spotlight for a positive reason - and the heart, the determination, the never-give-up attitude - the teamwork and sense of brotherhood displayed in celebration and in defeat - for all these reasons, the Houston Astros are winners.

Thank you guys. Some of us will be with you in LA. The rest of will be with you from afar. Thank you for giving us a reason to smile, to cheer, to yell, to pump our fist in the air.

We are #AstrosProud
And #HoustonStrong

A Place You Would Live But Have Never Visited - 30 Day Writing Challenge

This is a tough one, because I don't see myself living anywhere except Austin or Houston. I'm not pining away to live somewhere else. An acquaintance from Austin had a yearning to move to Hawaii, and she made it to happen. She sold a lot of her belongings, found new homes for her cats, and off she went. I don't have that desire.

But if I had to pick a city, I would say Seattle. I've never been there, but it sounds like a cool place to live. I know the weather can be dreary there, but I'm not a sun worshipper. It sounds similar in some ways to Austin.

Let's see if I can come up with 10:
1) I have lived in six cities, five of them in Texas.
2) I was born in Orlando, Florida, but we moved before Disney World opened, and I've never been there.
3) I did some student teaching at an inner city, Fourth Ward school in Houston.

6) I have been in local newspapers three times.
7) The one time I tried to drive I nearly crashed into the Moody Towers dorm at the University of Texas.

10) ??
I almost made it! Maybe I'll think of something else.

First Kiss and First Love - 30 Day Writing Challenge

I am not into this prompt at all. I think my first kiss may have been in 8th grade with a guy named Walt, but I'm not sure.

My first love? Maybe a guy named Eric in 7th grade. Not sure on this either.

My love life is not something I talk about.

Your Earliest Memory - Thirty Day Writing Challenge

I feel that I don't have a good memory. I don't think I have as many childhood memories as other people. And I'm not sure what's a memory and what's a picture I've seen that's acting like a memory.

So I'll say one memory might be me holding on to the coffee table in the living room, attempting to take my first steps. I was about three and a half years old. That's how old I was when I started walking. But there's also a picture of this, so that might be why I think I remember it.  I can't remember what I'm wearing, but I know my hair was in pigtails, or "doggy tails" as my mother called the hairstyle.

Five Problems with Social Media - 30 Day Writing Challenge Revisited

Trying again to complete this 30 Day Writing Challenge.

Five problems with Social Media:

1) Oversharing
Everyone has a different definition of oversharing. Some people post just every thought and experience they have on social media; some people don't post personal stuff at all. It's an individual decision. But sometimes the negativity, anger, frustration, sadness, illness, depression, etc can get overwhelming.

2) Vaguebooking
My most hated part of social media. Someone makes a vague comment, friends rush to ask, "What's wrong?" "Are you okay?" "What happened?" And then the person either doesn't respond, says, "Oh I'm fine, it was nothing really," or the response that makes me want to punch a wall, "Call me and I'll tell you." Vaguebooking is all about attention seeking. The end.

3) Ads
Sometimes I like the ads, because I find stuff I like that I want to buy. But sometimes they are annoying.

4) Fake news
No, I am NOT Donald Trump. But there is fake news on social media. Usually it's satire. Sometimes it can be difficult to discern what is real news and what is satire. This can cause fights to break out because people don't realize the news isn't real.

5) Uncomfortable images
I just do not want to see bloody bodies, graphic pictures from surgeries, or people with severe birth defects or injuries. Often these are posted by friends who are in the medical field. I understand that they are interested in these images, but that doesn't mean I am. I am squeamish and find them disturbing. I have alerted Facebook on more than one occasion. I just don't think they have a place on social media. And by people with deformities or injuries, I'm talking about close-up, detailed images. I'm not saying that people with deformities or injuries shouldn't be on social media. I'm saying their pictures shouldn't be posted to shock or sensationalize their situation.

6) One more:
People posting pictures of strangers without their permission.
A lot of people like the "feel good" stories circulating these days of fast food employees taking the time to feed a person with a disability. Someone takes a picture or a video and posts it without the knowledge or agreement of the people involved. Then people read the story, see the pictures, watch the video, and say, "Awww. How nice. How sweet. What a good deed they did."
But the people involved - How do they feel to have an intimate moment shared without their permission. Maybe the person with a disability is embarrassed that they had to ask for help, that they didn't have any other source of assistance. I also feel this way about pictures of homeless people sleeping on the sidewalk, or embarrassing pictures of people in a store with their buttcracks showing. Why do people think it's okay to post pictures of people without their permission? Especially when they are doing it as a way to make fun of the person, or make themselves feel superior.

To make this post less negative, here are my favorite things about social media:
1) Keeping up with friends and family
2) Inspirational / cute memes
3) Funny or sweet videos, especially involving animals and/or kids
4) Finding groups I would like to join, and learning about events I'd like to attend
5) Ads that offer items I'm interested in buying

45

I want one day without a presidential scandal. One day without news that he belittled someone, threatened someone, fired someone, made an inappropriate joke about someone, was accused of assaulting someone, showed his ignorance about the position he holds, the list goes on. And on. And on. Even with the most embattled presidents that we have endured during my lifetime, there has never been such a scandal-riddled administration.

He is ignorant. He is a liar. He is a narcissist. He is racist. These are not flimsy accusations. Every single one can be proven when he opens his mouth or sends a tweet.

Here is a short list of people he has flagrantly insulted:
Former presidents
Gold star families
Members of Congress
World leaders
Current and former members of his administration
The former FBI Director
Members of the media
Football players
Hurricane-ravaged citizens of Puerto Rico

Here are just a few of his dangerous ideas / tactics:
Threatening war with North Korea
Threatening war with Iran
Threatening to increase our nuclear arsenal
Threatening to invade Venezuela
Dismantling The Affordable Care Act
Dismantling environmental protections
Threatening to shut down / limit the media

Every day more bad news. Every day he makes a bad decision - with his mouth, his Twitter account, or the stroke of a pen. It is a never ending, vicious cycle. Every single day another shoe drops.

I want it to end. I want to feel safe again, or as safe as possible. I want to have a president and administration that I can respect and feel proud of. I want to believe my president is working hard to promote the values I believe in, that the protection, health, and success of all Americans is utmost in his mind.

I want a different president.
This one is failing.

Dancing with the Stars - Disney Nite - 10/16/17

I haven't written last week's recap yet, but I decided to post this one first.
I'm not usually a big fan of Disney Nite, so we'll see how this goes.

Victoria Arlen & Val
Jazz
Mickey Mouse
A cute, whimsical routine, but it seemed a little long, and of course I didn't like the extra dancers. I understand the jumps are tough for her because she can't feel her feet, and the over the head lift was exciting, but overall it wasn't a routine that knocked my socks off. It was solid, but not spectacular. The crowd loved it, though.
Len: "full of joy, sparkle, entertainment - fabulous"
Bruno: "jam-packed with fun and games, effortless and beautiful"
Carrie Ann: "absolutely in perfect sync"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 8

Vanessa Lachey & Maks
Waltz
Snow White
I enjoyed the costumes, and Vanessa looked enchanting. It was a lovely waltz - grand, sweeping, with nice turns and a good frame. There may have been a bobble or two on the footwork, but I enjoyed it. If Maks and Vanessa are still feuding, I couldn't tell from this dance. It was sweet as candy, and they looked happy to be dancing together. Maybe it's the magic of Disney.
Bruno: "simply beautiful dance"
Carrie Ann: "unconventional dance - liked the intimacy - stunning moments"
Len: "liked the choreography - beautiful flow"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Foxtrot
Pinnoccio
The dance didn't feel too long or too short; it felt just right. And it was gorgeous. It reminded me of Old Hollywood glamour. She has so much musicality. It was light, airy, effortless. They looked like they were floating. Stunning.
Carrie Ann: "classic, stunning, the finest hold"
Len: "delightful, I absolutely loved that"
Bruno: "bathing in stardust - timeless style and elegance - Fred Astaire meets Disney"
Scores: 9, 10, 9
My score: 9 (almost a 10)

Nick Lachey & Peta
Quickstep
Jungle Book
First of all, thank you to the costume department! You know what I'm talking about! :) Second of all, that was not a bad Quickstep Mr. Lachey! There may have been more Lindy Hop and Charleston in there than Quickstep, but I saw Quickstep too. There was decent speed and even some musicality. It was entertaining. For me, this was Nick's best dance.
Len: "bare necessities but fun and entertaining"
Bruno: "sense of fun, Charleston, but you need to keep your frame"
Carrie Ann: "having fun, letting loose"
Scores: 7, 8, 7
My score: 8

Drew Scott & Emma
Viennese Waltz
Muppets
They were so cute as puppets!
They wanted the dance to be sweet and romantic. I didn't feel the romance until the end, but that was okay. I thought this was a beautiful dance, and shows how far Drew has come in just a few weeks. The turns were gorgeous, and so fast. They flew across and around the floor. His partnering skills were surprisingly good. I loved the colors in her dress, and the rainbow on the dance floor. I was impressed by this performance.
Bruno: "Prince Charming - more and more polished every week"
Carrie Ann: "one of my favorite couples - fluid and polished"
Len: "I liked your footwork, but you went over the top at the end"
Scores: 9, 8, 8
My score: 8 (almost a 9)

Sasha Pieterse & Gleb
Rumba
Little Mermaid
She has lost 37 pounds!
This was a proper Rumba. And it was sexy, but because it was Disney Nite, it was a bit whimsical too. I thought she moved well, with decent, but not spectacular, hip action. She had nice chemistry with Gleb. And the red hair suits her.
Carrie Ann: "loved the way your body interprets these dances"
Len: "well-crafted routine, lovely, well done"
Bruno: "siren, enchantress of the sea"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

Terrell Owens & Cheryl
Quickstep
Lion King
Uh-oh. Rant coming. Prepare!
The extra dancers, moving scenery, and fog were SO distracting! Ugh! I guess he danced okay but it was hard to tell. I'm irritated. The performance was so cluttered and hectic. I think this was unfair. The other dancers so far didn't have the opportunity to hide behind such a big production number. I can't give this a good score. I wasn't entertained. And he was out of hold a lot. He looked happy. But I'm not pleased.
"Hard to see the footwork through the trees" - Tom (Exactly Tom!)
Len: "speed and control, kept your posture"
Bruno: "maintained the frame, footwork much better, a proper Quickstep"
Carrie Ann: "new connectedness, y'all were in sync"
Scores: 9, 8, 8
My score: 7

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Argentine Tango
Pirates of the Caribbean
I was trying not to thing of Riker & Allison's iconic Pirates of the Caribbean dance, which I adore. Luckily this dance was different, with different music. There weren't any exciting lifts in this Argentine Tango - likely because of Frankie's back injury, plus he's a small dude. On the downside, I felt that Witney was leading this dance. But on the plus side, it was passionate, alluring, and fiery at times. Not the best Argentine Tango I've seen, but definitely solid. They covered the floor well. The crowd loved it.
Bruno: "You've got your first blockbuster! Sizzling chemistry"
Carrie Ann: "You've got pirate game! So much intensity - nailed it!"
Len: "proper, swashbuckling routine"
Scores: 10, 9, 10
My score: 8 (Wow, I must be cranky tonight)

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Foxtrot
Moana - He danced to his own song. :)
I doubt that Len will like the rap-ish interlude, but I did, and so did the crowd. The performance felt like a Rumba at first. It was a crisp, clean, uplifting routine. Lots of content, beautiful lines, great musicality. I have high expectations for Jordan, and I was pleased with this routine. Once again, their chemistry was sensational.
Carrie Ann: "unstoppable, delivered it perfectly"
Len: "Foxtrot in hold was so good"
Bruno: "smash hit"
Scores: 10, 10, 10
My score: 9 (Man, I am a toughie tonight! I did not expect the judges to give them a perfect score!)

Nikki Bella & Artem
Jazz
Coco
My internal dialogue during the routine:
Extra dancers - ugh!
Oh good, they're gone!
Oh damn, they're back!
I totally enjoyed this Mexican folk music dance. It's something we haven't seen on "Dancing with the Stars" that I can recall. And that lift with the male dancers hoisting the female dancers was very cool and innovative, I must admit. Good energy and a unique style. Very colorful too. I liked it. Nikki was glowing. She looked happy and comfortable.
Len: "so joyous, full of fun - flavors of Mexico"
Bruno: "fiesta time!"
Carrie Ann: "fantastic, traditional folk dance"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 9

In jeopardy:
Sasha and Gleb
Frankie & Witney (WHAT!?!?)
I'm not happy that Sasha was eliminated, but I'm relieved that Frankie wasn't voted out. Sasha is a beautiful young woman, and I have enjoyed her watching her journey.

Dancing with the Stars - Guilty Pleasures Nite - 10/2/17

Yep, I'm more than a week behind. A lot going on here. But I'm still writing recaps.

The opening was a fun dance to C&C Music Factory's "Everybody Dance Now."
And yay - no elimination!

Drew Scott & Emma
Argentine Tango
His guilty pleasure is crime shows.
Wow, huge improvement! Way to go Drew! Best dance by him by a mile! I was very impressed by his partnering skills. Good Argentine Tango content, he looked sexy, the dance was slow and seductive but the turns were fast, and he executed a strong and secure over the head lift. I'm amazed!
Len: "same standard - you're on a roll"
Bruno: "You cracked the case!"
Carrie Ann: "You showed everyone how to go first!"
Scores: 8, 7, 8
My score: 8 (!)

Derek Fisher & Sharna
Cha Cha
His guilty pleasure is the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" show.
It was a cute routine. He had some moves, and some musicality, but I would have liked to see more. I also wanted to see more Cha Cha content. But I did enjoy the booty popping. A little more bounce would have been nice. But it was an entertaining routine.
Bruno: "vibrant and colorful, bootylicious"
Carrie Ann: "hitting the ballroom and latin lines"
Len: "Will Smith would have been proud of you, and so am I"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

Victoria Arlen & Val
Quickstep
Her guilty pleasure is the song "Tub Thumping"
The lockers and extra dancers were distracting, but I enjoyed the routine. She had decent speed and frame, and I thought her musicality was quite strong. There was a lightness and a brightness to her step, a bouncy rhythm. It was a fun, happy performance that made me smile.
Carrie Ann: "You're on a path to a 10"
Len: "needed more body contact"
Bruno: "you went for it"
Scores: 8, 7, 7
My score: 8

Vanessa Lachey & Alan (Maks had a personal issue)
Jazz
Her guilty pleasure is being silly with her girlfriends.
Even though Alan wasn't in the routine much, I still felt that there was a lot of content. The lifts were excellent! It was a fun, upbeat routine with a great song. Vanessa was definitely front and center despite the female troupe dancers, and yay for the adorable pink dress!!
Len: "Everybody had fun"
Bruno: "Mommy keeps getting yummier - I absolutely loved it"
Carrie Ann: "two wobbles"
Scores: 7, 8, 8
My score: 8

Nikki Bella & Artem
Viennese Waltz
Her guilty pleasure is "50 Shades of Gray"
HELLO! That was the sexiest Viennese Waltz I've ever seen. Passionate, fiery, seductive, sizzling. It was also a proper Viennese Waltz. Grand, sweeping, beautiful lines, fast turns. Everyone is on their game so far tonight. I'm seeing a lot of improvement!
Bruno: "Kinky Nikki - amazing performance"
Carrie Ann: "risky move - great job"
Len: "not exactly Old Vienna - a tad on the aggressive side"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 8

Frankie Muniz & Witney
Samba
His guilty pleasure is boy bands.
Of course I loved the music, and it was a cute routine, but I think he needed more hip action. He looked happy and relaxed, but his movements were a little stiff. He didn't have the rhythm and bounce that you need in a Samba. He had the boy band part covered, but not the Samba feel.
Carrie Ann: "You were great at the boy band stuff - Samba not so much - I want more consistency"
Len: "a lot of fun, but Carrie Ann is right"
Bruno: "You passed the audition"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

Lindsey Stirling & Mark
Jive
Her guilty pleasure is being in her pajamas all day.
I love the Jive - it's so fun, energetic, and lively, and this Jive was no exception. Lindsey had excellent musicality, great bounce, strong kicks and flicks, and wonderful chemistry with Mark. The routine checked all the boxes that I look for in a successful Jive. And the performance put a smile on my face.
Len: "lots of Jive content - dance of the season!"
Bruno: "She was never out-danced."
Carrie Ann: "One of my favorite numbers of all time"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 9

Sasha Pieterse & Gleb
Jazz
Her guilty pleasure is baking.
I hate to be like Len and say there wasn't enough dancing, but here I go - there wasn't enough dancing. It was a cute routine, but it was more of a pantomime of baking set to music. There is very little to critique in this performance because there just wasn't enough dancing.
Bruno: "all the right ingredients, but didn't really come together"
Carrie Ann: "well-executed"
Len: "didn't showcase your ability to dance"
Scores: 7, 6, 6
My score: 6

Nick Lachey & Peta
Jazz
His guilty pleasure is romantic comedies.
Extra dancers - ugh! But the Nick Lachey spunk is back. He had a big smile on his face and I could tell he was working hard. He moved his hips a little, and I saw some musicality. The problem is, he was trying so hard that his movements were often stiff and jerky. He was jumping more than he was dancing. But I have to give him credit for his determination and work ethic.
Carrie Ann: "You're finally having fun."
Len: "concept, confidence, commitment"
Bruno: "you've got your juices flowing"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

Terrell Owens and Cheryl
Salsa
His guilty pleasure is breakdancing.
Frankie's dance had a lot of boy band and a little Samba. Terrell's dance had a good amount of Salsa but not much breakdancing. Which was fine. But the dance was just okay for me. It was rather slow and plodding. The lift was good, but otherwise there wasn't much for me to get excited about. It was just so-so. For me, he doesn't live up to his bravado.  And there were extra dancers. Did you think I wouldn't mention that? Can you see me rolling my eyes and groaning?
Len: "You've come back with a nice mix of Salsa. Not a touchdown, but you're in the end zone."
Bruno: "You had your own style - Cheryl made you look good."
Carrie Ann: "You finally brought it - but there was a boo boo" (I thought Carrie Ann was overly excited about Terrell's performance)
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

Jordan Fisher & Lindsay
Charleston
His guilty pleasure is comic books / superheroes.
This as an innovative routine with fantastic musicality. I saw a good amount of Charleston in there. The stage colors and extra dancers were distracting at times, but overall it was a successful, entertaining routine.
Bruno: "mission indescribable - visual flair + action blockbuster"
Carrie Ann: "you're so amazing - you were never lost - always in control"
Len: "virtually no Charleston"
Scores: 9, 7, 9
My score: 8

Project Runway: Dixie Cup Challenge

Also known as the Women on the Go Challenge
Also known as the Friends & Family of the Project Runway Crew Challenge

The episode began with the Twins Elimination One Hour Challenge (too many capital letters?)

For the first time, the twins are on their own, as individual designers.
They can't work together.
They can't help each other.
They can't even bounce ideas off each other.

Is anyone surprised that Shawn fell apart and couldn't make anything without her sister's help?
What did they think was going to happen this season? Obviously they didn't plan for such a scenario. I guess they believed they would both make it to the finals and Fashion Week.

Shawn conceded and was eliminated from the competition.
There were a lot of tears on and off the runway.

"I'll miss Shawn's emotional support," Claire said.
Okay....

Margarita spent her time in the workroom obsessing over the idea that Claire was ripping off her design from the previous challenge. When Claire had her critique with Tim, however, she changed her look and it no longer resembled Margarita's.

The Runway
My critiques:

Amy - What is that? It looks like a costume or a karate outfit or something.
Brandon - too many layers, and the top looks like a bib
Batani - the color is nice, but the dress is very plain - not much design to it
Margarita - I don't like the color combination
Claire - very well made, flattering, looks expensive - The top is very cute, and the print on the pants is nice - This is also a very versatile outfit.
Ayana - very cute dress, sexy, and I also liked the styling.
Michael - not flattering, and I don't like the colors or the print
Kenya - I like the colors and I like the skirt, but the top is not flattering, especially in the bust area. I like peplums, but does she have to have one on nearly every garment?
Kentaro - I'm not a fan of the color scheme, and I think the gown looks matronly. But I do like the detailing in the back

My top designers: Claire and Ayana
My lowest designers: Amy and Michael

The Judges' Six:
Michael - bottom
Batani - bottom
Kenya - bottom
Claire - top
Kentaro - top
Margarita - bottom

The judges actually had good and bad things to say about most of the six designers.

My pick to win this week: Claire
My pick to go home: Ah, that's a tough one. I want Amy to go home, but I can't choose her. I mean, I could, but I usually pick from the judges' six. So I would reluctantly say Michael.

In the episode, Claire was declared the winner, and Michael stalked off the runway. We don't know yet who went home. Michael and Margarita especially are angry that Claire won. They are accusing her of cheating.

If we are just talking about what was shown on the runway in this episode, there actually wasn't anyone who deserved to win in my opinion, except perhaps Ayana. Her look was cute, well-made, and fashionable, but she was only safe in the judges' determination. I chose Claire as the winner this week because her look was successful - well made, attractive, stylish, something that I think a lot of women would want to wear and would look good in - but how much design is in that look? Its a top and a pair of pants. Michael's and Kentaro's looks had much more design in them. But I didn't like them. Michael's was honestly bad in my opinion. The print wasn't good, the look was unflattering - there was too much design. Kentaro's look had too much fabric, and the best part of the gown - the back - was covered up. Claire's design was extremely simple, but it was effective. Her model looked great. It is a look that will sell. It would also look good on a variety of body types. Her design in the workroom DID resemble Margarita's dress from the previous week, but the finished product on the runway did not.

Project Runway - JC Penny Challenge - Inspired by Menswear 9/28/17

The designers were paired up for this challenge. They each had to create a look that was cohesive with their partner's garment.

My critiques:

Ayana & Michael:
Ayana: Her top still looked like a hospital gown. Overall the look was blah.
Michael: not flattering at all

Kenya & Amy:
Kenya: The look is well-made, classy, professional, but the judges will likely say it's dowdy
Amy: Her garment definitely looks like something Kenya would make. But the top makes her bust look weird.

Kentaro & Brandon:
Kentaro: cute, sporty, I like the colors
Brandon: the garment is very Brandon, sporty, but sexier than Kentaro's.
This duo produced the most cohesive collection.

Claire & Shawn:
Claire: sporty but schizophrenic
Shawn: just okay, bland color, on second look it's worse than I thought, especially in the bust area
This duo produced the least cohesive collection.

Batani & Margaria
Batani: I like the color a lot. The dress looks expensive but the design is a little plain.
Margarita: very fashionable, unique, the model looks great. I think the color is a little drab, but definitely this is the best garment on the runway in this episode.

My top designers: Margarita & Batani
My bottom designers: Michael & Ayana

The Judges:
They chose Batani & Margaria  and Kentaro & Brandon as the top designers.
Kenya & Amy and Claire & Shawn received the lowest scores.

My pick to win: Margarita
My pick to go home: Claire

The judges chose Margarita as the winner.
But no one was voted out in this episode. The judges couldn't decide between voting off Claire or Shawn. So they gave them each one hour to create a garment and then they would decide who should go home. Heidi said, "This should go without saying - but you cannot help each other." That sentence translates to: "Shawn is going home." Obviously I know what happens because I'm writing this recap ten days late, but I would have said this ten days ago too.

Project Runway: Models as Clients Challenge 9/21/17

Yes, I'm very behind my recaps. Real life has intervened in my blogging life. But I'm still doing the recaps, even though they're late.

Honestly, I'm struggling with these Project Runway recaps. I know that I don't know much about fashion. And it's so hard to know what the judges will and won't like. But my recaps are about what I do and don't like, plus what the judges decide.

As usual, Claire had to rescue Shawn constantly during this episode.

My critiques:
Kentaro - skirt over jeans? I guess that's fashionable
Claire - Where does the jacket end and the shorts begin? Not thrilled with all black...
Ayana - Why the robe? Also the styling was messy. Did she just roll out of bed?
Michael - The look is almost too much, but it is innovative and flattering
Brandon - The judges will probably love it.
Shawn - sporty, sexy, the cut-out shoulders are very in-fashion
Margarita - looks very Miami to me, but is that a good thing or a bad thing? Definitely streetwear. I'm not a fan of mismatched colors
Batani - too much going on for me
Amy - rather boring, not memorable
Samantha - very cute, flirty, a very Samantha garment
Kenya - a well-made outfit, but I don't like the vest - it looks too small

My top looks - Samantha, Michael, Shawn
My bottom looks - Claire, Ayana, Brandon

The Judges' Six:
Claire
Shawn,
Samantha
Kentaro
Kenya
Margarita

Claire, Samantha, and Margarita had the lower scores.
Shawn, Kentaro, and Kenya were the top designers.

Who I thought should win: Michael
Who I thought should go home: Claire

The winner of the challenge was Kentaro.
Samantha was sent home.
