Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Halloween Nite

Cranky, headachy librarianintx is not ready for Halloween nite.
I'm not a fan of Halloween.
I don't enjoy scary or creepy.
I'm still trying to recover from the spider episode of "Dr. Who".

1) Milo & Witney
Contemporary
Song: "Toxic"
Milo channeled DeMarcus and executed (no pun intended) some very daring and challenging lifts. I am so impressed by this seventeen year old young man! He has so much energy and vitality, and he makes Witney raise her game even higher than it usually is. Excellent partnering skills, very passionate and fiery, this was a professional-looking contemporary routine. And it was creepy. Milo's eyes - ewwww. I liked Witney's sexy nurse's costume though.
Len: "spellbinding, terrific, great acting"
Bruno: "mind-bending and insanely good, impeccably acted"
Carrie Ann: "You are so impressive, mature, in control, dynamic duo"
Scores: 10, 10, 10
My score: 9 (almost a 10)

2) John & Emma
Paso Doble
For me, the music and the Halloween theme made this more of a parody of a Paso. It just did not work for me, especially in the beginning, when he was running around exaggeratedly. It looked like a farce of a Paso. He did very poorly on the spin / lift too. The performance needed more fire, more refinement, better frame and shaping - overall it just needed to be much better. And I think the choreography was too challenging for him.
Bruno: "historical tragedy, too many mistakes"
Carrie Ann: "saw how much effort you put into it, never got your feet under you"
Len: "not super or natural, but in hold you were terrific"
Scores: 6, 7, 6
My score: 6

3) DeMarcus & Lindsay
Salsa
Not only did the extra dancers clutter the stage and take the focus away from DeMarcus, the presence of the two male professional dancers accentuated DeMarcus' lack of hip action, especially in the beginning of the routine. However, Lindsay did utilize his strength in this competition: his lifting ability. Those lifts were otherwordly, never-before-seen-on-the-show, and they were thrilling. Overall, his Salsa dancing was passable, and he did find his hips as the routine progressed. But the performance will be remembered for the lifts.
Carrie Ann: "a few misses on the hands, but the lifts were out of this world"
Len: "rhythm, interesting choreography, lost some isolation on your hips, but had a breakthrough"
Bruno: "tidy, in sync, keep it going"
Scores: 8, 9, 9
My score: 8 (almost a 9)

4) Evanna & Keo
Tango
Girl is doing it for herself!
For me, though, she has been great this season, and this performance was no exception. Full of Tango content, great speed and frame, and she looked hot! Tight, sharp, multiple passes around the floor, and a great flourish at the end! The only dull spot was when the extra dancers got in her way when she was out of hold. Shine on girl! You rocked it!
Len: "plenty of Tango content, sharp, crisp, You sold the whole dance"
Bruno: "tame pussycat to a wild panther! Beautiful and deadly, strong and sexy, perfect lines"
Carrie Ann: "Evanna's on fire! Ferocity! You deserve a 10! You worked hard and it showed"
Scores: 10, 9, 10
My score: 9 (almost a 10)

5) Bobby & Sharna
Argentine Tango
This was Bobby's best dance! Sharna can make anyone look good, but Bobby really played it straight in this routine, and had just the right mix of allure and creepiness. It was dramatic, the story was interesting, it was captivating. I don't like Halloween, but I enjoyed this performance!
Bruno: "Argentine nightmare, storytelling was chilling, more contemporary, intriguing"
Carrie Ann: "best dance so far, authentically in the moment, mesmerizing"
Len: "mood and atmosphere, wanted more Argentine Tango content"
Scores: 8, 7, 7
My score: 8 (almost a 9)

6) Mary Lou & Sasha
Tango
The beginning of this routine was great - she came out with fire, and was strong and fierce. Her movements were dramatic and bold. And the end was good too. But the middle was a little slow for a Tango. The steps were definitely there, and there was a lot of Tango content. Her movements were precise and sharp. She was just missing speed in the middle section. But Sasha's leap was amazing!
Carrie Ann: "channeled emotional release, but the dance got away from you"
Len: "scary Mary, messed up your feet, lost your neck, but full of Tango content"
Bruno: "better out than in, you delivered what was on the menu, but with bad habits"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

7) Alexis & Alan
Jazz
Dance aside - So are they dating? How embarrassing for poor Alexis - She pours her heart out, and he's non-committal. Awkward!
Back to the dance:
This was a Jazz routine? It looked like a Jive to me, with some Lindy Hop thrown in. I had to rewind to make sure they said Jazz. Anyway, whatever it was, it was super cute, fun, and sweet as cotton candy. It was well-danced and well-choreographed. It was fast and sharp and never slowed down, with loads of lifts and tricks that were mostly well-executed. Alexis more than held her own and looked like the star that she is during the part with the extra dancers.
Len: "candy is dandy and so was this performance"
Bruno: "Halloween treat, effortless, fun 50's retro vibe"
Carrie Ann: "so adorable, no struggle, it's all there"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 9

8) Joe & Jenna
Argentine Tango
I don't know what to write anymore. Every week he says he's going to do better. And I thought I saw a seed of growth last week. The Argentine Tango is a good style for him because it's structured, and there is time in hold. And the one thing he sort of has going for him in dance is his partnering skills. But those skills were not as evident in this routine. He especially botched the lift / trick at the end. And the others you could tell that Jenna was assisting him by hoisting herself.
Anyway, he'll probably be safe again.
Bruno: "he's alive and he moves! Looked like an Argentine Tango, better timing"
Carrie Ann: "what a huge change, presence, commitment"
Len: "your best dance"
Scores: 8, 7, 7
My score: 6

9) Juan Pablo & Cheryl
Jive
Great Jive content, great choreography, and great musicality. Juan Pablo makes it look easy. He has such natural dancing ability. His moves look effortless. It was a fun routine. I think he is the front runner in this competition, with Milo and Alexis close behind. This was truly a perfect routine.
Carrie Ann: "sheer perfection"
Len: "got the balance right between the theme and the dance"
Bruno: "I bow to thee, your majesty, perfection all the way through"
Scores: 10, 10, 10
My score: 10

In jeopardy:
Alexis & Alan (WHAT?!?!?)
Mary Lou & Sasha

Mary Lou was eliminated. :-(

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Disney Nite

I'm going to try not to be a Grinch about Disney Nite, y'all.
I just think it's kind of hokey sometimes.
Okay, let's go!

1) Alexis & Alan
Foxtrot
Movie: Pocahontas
Nothing hokey about this routine, so we're off to a good start. Alexis and Alan were aided by great camera work and an overactive fog machine, but they didn't actually need help. It was a beautiful dance. She managed to avoid a few lifts by keeping her toes on the floor during the long spins, and she had a lovely frame, great posture, and wonderful extension. The dance was light, ethereal, and gorgeous. And oh by the way, they're dating, or at least seriously considering dating.
Len: "well-crafted routine, lovely chemistry"
Bruno: "Disney magic stronger than ever, so in tune, exquisitely lyrical, gorgeous"
Carrie Ann: "made me believe in fairytales"
Scores: 10, 9, 10
My score: 9

2) Juan Pablo & Cheryl
Viennese Waltz
Movie: Beauty & the Beast
I am endeavoring not to be cranky about the extra dancers, because this is a nite that will likely include multiple routines with extra dancers. This was a very theatrical performance and while I did enjoy it, I have to channel Len and say, 'It was a bit hectic.' It was more than a little cluttered for my taste - the horde of dancers, the long table, the chandelier - the crowded floor took away their ability to dance the Viennese Waltz in my opinion. But the dancing they did accomplish was quite stellar - fast turns, good hold and frame, it was full of grandeur and style. He makes a very dashing leading man, mullet and all.
Bruno: "nailed that character, feel, style, and content spot on"
Carrie Ann: "So good! Flair, finesse"
Len: "dance mirrored the music, gusto and zest, you are a fantastic dancer"
Scores: 10, 9, 10
My score: 9

3) Demarcus & Lindsay
Charleston
Movie: Hercules
I love watch lifts by Demarcus and Lindsay. He is so strong and she is so fearless! He picks her up and holds her high in the air like she's a feather; I'm never worried that he's going to drop her. So the lifts were great. But I thought his footwork was rather sloppy. He seemed off with the music. The lifts were spectacular, but I felt he needed more work on the dance elements. I had high expectations for this routine, but I was a little disappointed.
Oh my goodness, Lindsay lost her shoe! I didn't see that! Way to carry on, girl!
Carrie Ann: "A hero is born! Breakthrough! Athleticism, grace"
Len: "jam-packed with lifts and tricks, wonderful job, but not a lot of Charleston"
Bruno: "theater man, Broadway, leading man, most complete performance to date"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 8

4) Evanna & Keo
Jazz
Movie: Tangled
I simply adore the enthusiasm and joy that she infuses into every dance. You can tell she loves being in the ballroom and performing every week. And Keo is thrilled to have a partner who can dance! Their dance this week was magic. Great chemistry, airy lifts, entertaining routine.
Len: "light and shade, lovely feel to it, but not spectacular - well danced, nice routine"
Bruno: "you have found your stride, but you chase the music"
Carrie Ann: "you did Disney proud, but don't rush - You have the talent"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 9

5) Joe & Jenna
Jive
Movie: Wreck it Ralph
I saw growth! I saw some actual dancing! I'm choosing to look at the positives with Joe tonight. Yes, there was still too much of him standing still. But I saw him make some real attempts. He had a little bounce. He tried some kicks. His partnering skills were decent. And he looked happy. This was your best dance Joe!
Bruno: "a very faint glimmer of hope - timing is better - you tried - work on the quality"
Carrie Ann: "go Joe! Vast improvement, seemed more confident"
Len: "You get knocked down, but you dust yourself off and you give it your all - lacked Jive content"
Scores: 6, 5, 6
My score: 6

6) Mary Lou & Sasha
Contemporary
Movie: Mulan
You could tell the song and the dance meant a lot to Mary Lou; she was emotional at times during routine, and definitely after the dance. I think her emotions got the better of her. She was a little stiff, especially in the beginning, not as relaxed and fluid as a contemporary routine should be. She and Sasha are both short, so the lifts were competent but not spectacular. I appreciate her vulnerability and I love the song like she does, but I wanted a little more from the performance.
Carrie Ann: "I live for these moments - you connected with all of us deeply"
Len: "gentle, understated, fluidity, musicality - competent, nice routine"
Bruno: "determination, you get there eventually, enjoy it!"
Scores: 9, 8, 8
My score: 8

7) John & Emma
Quickstep
Movie: The Jungle Book
John at 58 is NOT old! I think he coped very well with the Quickstep - nice speed, good footwork and posture, and very good musicality and enthusiasm. He had a little bobble pulling Emma between his legs (that sounds dirty), but otherwise his partnering skills were solid. I especially liked the strong finish. Nice job John!
Len: "high energy, lots of content, spectacular job"
Bruno: "brought sparkle to the jungle, proper, recognizable Quickstep"
Carrie Ann: "best performance as a whole, just a few snafus"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8 (almost a 9)

8) Bobby & Sharna
Waltz
Movie: The Little Mermaid
It's hard to take Bobby seriously, even though I think he is serious about this competition, and he wants to do well. Bobby needs to work on control and finesse. He needs refinement. It's good when spins are tight and fast, but his spins more than bordered on out of control. I was worried about Sharna at times, and I shouldn't have to worry about her safety DURING A WALTZ! Reign it in Bobby!
Bruno: "catch of the day, slippery at times, brave effort"
Carrie Ann: "still holding the pose, there is improvement"
Len: "outside your comfort zone, played it straight, proper Waltz"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

9) Milo & Witney
Quickstep
Movie: The Incredibles 2
OMG, their outfits! I had trouble not focusing on their little speedos (unitards). Action packed indeed! I loved Milo's daring entrance on to the dance floor. It was a fast Quickstep, nice speed and body contact. I adore Milo's youthful energy and enthusiasm!
Carrie Ann: "incredible! fabulous routine! full of life and zest"
Len: "full of zippity do da, but not enough body contact" [mmmm]
Bruno: "Blockbuster! Bring on the sequel!"
Scores: 9, 8, 10
My score: 9

In jeopardy:
Demarcus & Lindsay
Alexis & Alan
What?! John, Bobby, and especially Joe are safe AGAIN?!

BUT NO ONE GOES HOME ON DISNEY NITE!
PSYCH!
YAY!!

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Trios Nite Recap Part 2

6) Mary Lou / Sasha / Nastia Liukin
Charleston
From the video package I was worried that Nastia would out-dance Mary Lou. But we were fooled! After a video filled with weeping and insecurity, Mary Lou came out beaming and full of confidence. She and Nastia were very well-matched despite the height and age difference. It was a fun, high-energy routine full of gymnastic elements, with some surprisingly heavy lifting and balancing by Sasha. They were all terrific!
Carrie Ann: "even better this week! All shone so brightly!"
Len: "fun, snappy, Len is a happy chappy!"
Bruno: "as invigorating as a double expresso - showcased your girls perfectly!"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 9

7) Milo / Witney / Riker Lynch
Salsa
Love me some Riker!
BAM!! As Len says, "No messin' about!" Straight into the routine, loads of Salsa content, sexy, fun, party time, they were SO in sync! Riker was the perfect trio partner for Milo. They look like they've been dancing together for years - in the groove, so comfortable together. They made that routine look effortless. So youthful and vibrant. And of course a dance involving Riker Lynch has to include headbands!
Len: "fast, plenty of attack, clean, in control - but needed more hip action" [gasps from the audience, Carrie Ann, Bruno, and me!]
Bruno: "salsa-sensational! electrifying - details in the choreography were delicious!"
Carrie Ann: "teamwork makes the dream work - absolutely perfect!"
Scores: 10, 9, 10
My score: 9 (almost a 10)

8) Joe / Jenna / Jordan Kimball
Salsa
Song: "I'm Too Sexy"
Jenna worked her ass off in that routine - both her dancing, and choreographing as many sexy elements as possible in a prime time television show without violating decency standards. There was (attempted) ripping off of shirts, (attempted) gyrating by Joe and Jordan, falling suspenders, and a sort of "Flashdance" re-make. As a parody, it was mildly amusing. As an actual dance, it was cringe-worthy. Because Joe and Jordan just can't dance. Salsa elements were non-existent in this routine. Joe's hips were a no-show. One positive thing I can say is that Joe's partnering skills were decent. It helped that he had another guy WITH him of course. Still, they didn't drop Jenna. So good job boys!
Bruno: "unique experience - Magic Mike, Tragic Mike, Mike & the Mechanics - dancing may or may not be included - timing was non-existent"
Carrie Ann: "Jenna, you get MVP - that was magical, what you did with what you had"
Len: "hard to put into words what I thought about that routine - Jenna, what you've done is terrific"
Scores: 5, 5, 5
My score: 6 (for the partnering)

9) Alexis / Alan / Maddie Ziegler
Tango
Maddie is an amazing dancer, AND Alexis more than held her own. This was a professional looking dance: very fast, great frame and posture, they were all working it! I didn't like the blinding lights and lasers, but I loved this routine! Fantastic! Alexis and Maddie look like sisters.
Carrie Ann: "very strong, but didn't come together as one"
Len: "good mix of Tango content and beautiful attacking Tango, enjoyed it"
Bruno: "You empowered your girls - elegance and sophistication - brilliant"
Scores: 8, 8, 9
My score: 9

10) Bobby / Sharna / Lindsay Sterling
Cha Cha
Song: "Can't Touch This"
This was an entertaining routine, especially for someone of my generation. I loved Bobby's enthusiasm, the MC Hammer moves, the Hammer pants, and the leap off the judges' table - all highly enjoyable. But I saw very little Cha Cha content. Like, next to none. And I barely noticed Lindsay in the dance. Still, that meant that Bobby was the star of the routine, which he was - and as he should be.
Len: "nailed the Hammer part - Cha Cha not so good - needs more finesse"
Bruno: "sledgehammer to the Cha Cha - so entertaining - but the Cha Cha was lost in translation"
Carrie Ann: "so much joy - didn't miss one step - but need to work on technique"
Scores: 7, 6, 7
My score: 7

In jeopardy:
Evanna & Keo
Tinashe & Brandon

Results: SO UNFAIR!! Tinashe & Brandon were eliminated. Sigh. A strong contender for the nirrorball trophy exits the ballroom while at least one contestant who sucks at dancing survives to bomb another week. I have not been voting, so I shouldn't have a dog in this fight. But I don't think you will find a fan of the show who thinks Tinashe deserved to go home based on her dancing ability. She either got eliminated because people are jealous of her talent, or people didn't bother voting for her because they assumed she would continue to be safe. Even though she was in jeopardy last week as well. Terrible. These shocking and baseless eliminations never get any easier.

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Trios Nite Recap Part 1

I love me some trios! Here we go dance fans!

1) Juan Pablo / Cheryl / Melissa Rycroft
Cha Cha
At times the dance was very sexy and sultry, and at times the chemistry felt off - too forced - and they were out of sync at times too. The back flip also didn't go very well. So it was a back and forth kind of routine - kinda worked, kinda didn't. But regardless, he's hot, he can dance, and he knows how to shake his assets.
Len: "three was terrific - wanted more Cha Cha content - Your bottom is the tops"
Bruno: "mercury is rising - dead sexy - but lost sync"
Carrie Ann: "sexy: check - but holding back just a bit"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

2) Tinashe / Brandon / Amy Purdy
Tango
I think this should have been a trio with another guy. Nothing against Amy, but there were too many times that Tinashe wasn't dancing, or wasn't enough in the spotlight. The routine put too much emphasis on Brandon. Tinashe should have been the focus, especially since they were in jeopardy last week.
Mea Culpa! I just realized I've been spelling Tinashe's name wrong this whole time! I'm so sorry! I'm a terrible recapper!
Bruno: "guilty of brilliance! Superb"
Carrie Ann: "innovative choreography - cohesive - You were a star in that routine" (mmm)
Len: "handled it brilliantly - well done"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 8

3) John / Emma / Joey Fatone
Argentine Tango
John and Joey as Greek gods...okay...
I thought John was a little shaky in the beginning, and again I felt there wasn't enough emphasis on him at first, but then the routine really came together. There was drama and passion and they all gave 100% and interacted well together. And Emma's half a dress - va va voom!
Carrie Ann: "started out rough, but then got special - went against type"
Len: "Greek tragedy in the beginning - then straight into the dance"
Bruno: "melodrama among the ruins - great job in spite of it all"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 8

4) Evanna / Keo / Scarlett Byrne
Salsa
In this case, even though the trio included another girl, Evanna was a bright light in this routine. This girl can dance! Scarlett was okay, a little rough in the beginning, but Evanna was confident and sassy throughout. She did not allow anyone to steal her spotlight. Great hips, and I was especially impressed with her posture and positioning in the complicated lift / spin. Awesome job Evanna!
Len: "nice Salsa content, polished performance, great routine"
Bruno: "saucy little spice girl - brighter, livelier, more confident"
Carrie Ann: "blown away, looked relaxed - just a little ahead of the music"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 9

5) DeMarcus / Lindsay / Rashad Jennings
Paso Doble
Team Pecs! :)
OMG, they DID NOT need to show his finger!! I was crying in the corner too (and more than slightly nauseous)
There was intensity, passion, and fire. I thought Lindsay was especially good in this routine, but she's the pro. I liked the interaction between the guys, although at times it looked too much like football practice to me - more scrimmage moves than dancing. But they went for it, and I appreciate that.
Bruno: "very hard to concentrate - clash of the Titans - loved the passion and aggression - but lost the artistry"
Carrie Ann: "showcased the physicality - but missed the shaping - You [DeMarcus] were trying to dance like Rashad"
Len: "got the guns, but lacked the ammunition"
Scores: 7, 7, 8
My score: 8

End of Part 1

Dancing with the Stars Most Memorable Year Nite part 2 recap 10/8/18

7) Juan Pablo & Cheryl
Samba
Year: 1999 - moved to the States for his career
Caliente! Mama Mia! The Samba is a celebration dance, and I am celebrating this routine! Holy smokes! I can't find a thing to criticize; it was near perfection! Juan Pablo was hot, sexy, smooth, passionate, confident - he was awesome dancing with Cheryl and by himself. Samba rolls are SO difficult, but he made them look effortless. And did I mention he's smokin hot? Fantastic!!
Len: standing ovation!
Bruno: "I'm still basking in the afterglow (me too!) One of the best Sambas in the history of the show."
Carrie Ann: "You are the son of Emmitt Smith, Gille Marini, and Mario Lopez"
Scores: 10, 10, 10
My score: 10!

8) John & Emma
Waltz
Year: 2016 - flood and girlfriend and mother died
Song: "Smile"
I appreciated the emotion in this routine. John is not the best dancer this season, but he puts his heart and soul into every routine, and he tries his best. He and Emma are so sweet together. His frame could have been better, but the dance was tender and had a nice fluidity.
Bruno: "charming and heartfelt, very moving, caring touch - be careful in hold"
Carrie Ann: "beautiful expression - work on posture"
Len: "I like the sentiment and elegance - but need to polish, refine"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

9) Bobby & Sharna
Contemporary
Year: 1998 - graduated high school
This choreography fit Bobby's personality, very well. He didn't have to conform or fit the mold of a dance style this week. He could be wacky and frenetic and energetic - but there were also lovely moments of softness, gentleness, contemplation. This was a successful dance for him, and he was emotional when it was over.
Carrie Ann: "real moments of authentic magic"
Len: "your best dance"
Bruno: "honest, real, fantastic dance, storytelling"
Scores: 8, 7, 8
My score: 8

10) Tenashe & Brandon
Rumba
Year: 2014 - album
Hip action - check!
Sultriness - check!
Chemistry - check!
But they didn't overdo anything. It was all very balanced. This was a picture perfect Rumba. They looked like a professional dance team. Stunning.
Len: "your best dance"
Bruno: "She knows how to work it - sensuous but elegant"
Carrie Ann: "You are unstoppable"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 9 (almost a 10)

11: DeMarcus & Lindsay
Argentine Tango
Year: 2016 - Superbowl and family
W-O-W!! Those lifts were amazeballs! Such power. Such strength. Such concentration. So ridiculously difficult. And his partnering skills are incredible. I was able to just gape and marvel at the incredible-ness without worrying about Lindsay. There was passion and intensity and some good gancho kicks. And have I mentioned the lifts? Seriously out of this world lifts. I am mega impressed!
Thrilling routine! DeMarcus is the man!!
Bruno: "DeMarcus the Titan! Almost superhuman - mind blowing"
Carrie Ann: "almost a Paso - intensity, power, passion - blew me away"
Len: "lifts were great - great dancing"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 9 (almost a 10)

In jeopardy:
Nancy & Val
Tenashe & Brandon
WTF?!?!?! Tenashe & Brandon are in the bottom? Nancy & Val don't belong there either. But as I have said repeatedly, DWTS is a popularity contest, NOT a dance competition.
Tenashe & Brandon are likely in jeopardy for a few reasons:
1) They are not as well known.
2) Brandon is a new professional.
3) She's so good people think they don't need to vote for her.
4) She's so good people believe she shouldn't be on the show.
5) People are jealous of her because she is beautiful and talented.

Nancy & Val were eliminated. :(

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Most Memorable Year Nite recap part 1 10/8/18

Grab your tissues dance fans - It's Most Memorable Year Nite!

1) Mary Lou & Sasha
Viennese Waltz
Year :1984 - winning gold medal and knee surgery
Song: "We are the Champions"
They had good movement across the floor, but I thought Mary Lou's moves at times were a little choppy for a Viennese Waltz. She needed to be more fluid. She was also dangerously close to a lift in that spin. But she was also beautifully expressive, and her blue dress was lovely. Once again Sasha's choreography ended a little early, which I find annoying.
Len: "athlete's fighting spirit - determination - lovely performance"
Bruno: "you keep going - you worked on your shoulders - wonderful sense of celebration"
Carrie Ann: "heart of determination - saw more of a struggle - but you pulled it together."
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

2) Milo & Witney
Jive
Year: 2018 - movie and graduation
Great job Milo! With his youthful energy and enthusiasm, I knew he would excel at the Jive. But what impressed me most was how controlled he managed to be. He didn't go crazy. His movements were sharp and precise and he has such good partnering skills. The dance on the judges' table and the back flip were rad, but the extra dancers were absolutely unnecessary. One criticism: His arm was bent weird at one point near the beginning of the routine. Otherwise: fantastic!
Bruno: "graduated with honor! Such strength and elasticity - fantastic!"
Carrie Ann: "clean, tight, and energetic - but a zombie arm"
Len: "fine routine, plenty of content, terrific Jive"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 9

3) Nancy & Val
Rumba
Year: 2006
The spins were good - fast and tight. But I think Val has been criticized in the past for Rumba choreography that lacks fluidity. It felt choppy to me. I didn't see a lot of flexibility; Nancy looked a little rigid. I also didn't any sexiness, any chemistry. Rumba is supposed to be a very sensuous dance. But it was a sweet dance.
Carrie Ann: "joy, love-based joy, sustained every movement, beautiful"
Len: "Family important, charm, naturalness - needed more hip action"
Bruno: "such warmth and tenderness - turns much improved - not much hip action - conservative"
Scores: 8, 7, 7
My score: 8

4) Alexis and Alan
Contemporary
Year: 2014 - Her mother was diagnosed with cancer.
I have to say, it is so unfair to force the contestants to watch these ultra emotional video packages. Often the professional dancers shield their partners from the recorded material so that it won't upset them and possibly negatively affect the routine.
Anyway, this was a beautiful dance. Lovely, light, airy lifts that were also dramatic. Alexis has wonderful flexibility and extension, and she and Alan have a great partnership and intoxicating chemistry.
Len: "your dancing never disappoints, lovely musicality and flexibility, great lifts - just a bit staccato"
Bruno: "She's always with you - You danced like an angel"
Carrie Ann: "You gave us all a beautiful gift"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 9

5) Evanna & Keo
Viennese Waltz
Year: 2006 - Harry Potter and an eating disorder
That was magic! I so enjoyed the beginning, when she was alone on the stage, slowly descending the stairs. The buildup was delicious. And then - wow - she and Keo took off! So much speed and power, but also elegance and grace. And Evanna is so flexible! I saw some ballet elements in there too. Gorgeous! I loved it!
Bruno: "Your magic is stronger than ever, and we are under your spell! Wonderful nuances - determined, self-assured"
Carrie Ann: "performance has grown - drew us in - both power and demur"
Len: "powerful, full of gusto and maintained elegance - magic performance"
Scores: 9, 9, 9
My score: 9 (almost a 10!)
I'm so excited for her and Keo!

6) Joe & Jenna
Viennese Waltz
Year: 2018 - first real relationship
There is still so much that needs to be improved. He was still just standing sometimes. His posture was terrible. He was miles away from Jenna at times - like she has a communicable disease. But I did see a tiny bit of growth. He looked like he was trying this week. That's something.
Carrie Ann: "so much more opening - You went for it - staying on tempo - still growing"
Len: "work in progress, more confident, you had a go"
Bruno: "Song got you moving, work on the quality of movement"
Scores: 6, 6, 6
My score: 6

Dancing with the Stars Voting Glitch - My Thoughts

https://www.etonline.com/dancing-with-the-stars-voting-error-contestants-react-to-phone-glitch-exclusive-110837

Apparently there was a glitch with the phone-in votes, so phone votes were not counted for this week's performance shows. Only the judges' scores and online votes figured in this week.

Some people are saying that this is particularly unfair to ousted contestant Danelle. The reason people believe she is at a particular disadvantage is that more of her fans and the people voting for her might be blind or have another disability, and therefore probably called in more than voted online.

While this COULD be true, I want to make it very clear for people who don't know, that people who are blind and people with disabilities can and often do use computers. Assistive technology such as screen readers, magnification software, and voice recognition programs enable people with various disabilities to use computers. Some of this technology is expensive; however, the trend lately has been for some programs to be lower cost or even free. Some software can be downloaded directly from a web site with no cost involved.

Having said all this, I agree with those who are saying that Danelle should be allowed back into the competition, and a double elimination should take place next Monday night. A glitch is a glitch, and it's not fair that an entire segment of votes did not count. We also must keep in mind that for some people, disabled or not, the cost of a computer and Internet connection are prohibitive, so there are likely more phone than computer votes for the show. Also, for some people living in rural areas of the country, Internet access may be intermittent or even non-existent.

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Vegas Nite part 2 recap 10/2/18

7) Joe & Jenna
Jazz
I'm at a loss. What did he do in that routine? Was there any dancing? He sat at the bar. He helped Jenna off the bar. He walked around the dance floor. Two other dancers threw Jenna at him and he caught her. Then he sat back down at the bar. That was the routine. Did I miss actual dancing that he did?
Len: "held my interest, nice mood about it, good job"
Bruno: "good Jazz content - need to come out of your shell - have the courage of your intentions"
Carrie Ann: "you were proud of what you've done - off tempo but extending"
Scores: 6, 6, 6
My score: 5

8) Evanna & Keo
Jive
Song: "Heatwave"
Loads of Jive content in this routine! There is a height difference between Evanna and Keo, plus Keo is so fast that I felt Evanna was struggling to keep up at times. She also looked a little squatty at one point. But for the most part she did keep up with a very demanding Jive. Her energy and bounce were mostly good and I was pleased with her kicks and flicks.
Bruno: "cooked up a pretty tasty Jive - became feisty, alive, vivacious"
Carrie Ann: "you used every single ounce of movement - just be careful with your musicality - You were ahead of the music"
Len: "could have been a bit cleaner in places, but high energy, fast, and athletic - right on time"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

9) Bobby & Sharna
Quickstep
I am struggling with Vegas nite. I have loved Vegas nite / week in seasons past. But this episode has had too many gimmicks and not enough sizzle. This routine was way too much about the magic trick. Bobby's frame and legs were atrocious. He danced like he had a sack of potatoes in his pants (I was going to write something else - you're welcome) I'm just not feeling this one.
Carrie Ann: "very entertaining but tone it down"
Len: "Las Vegas vibe, plenty of entertainment"
Bruno: "fanatic gone manic - be gentle! Tone it down and refine"
Scores: 7, 6, 6
My score: 6

10) Nancy & Val
Paso Doble
Of course I didn't like the extra dancers. But I did like the fact that Nancy was the epicenter of the routine. I liked the drama and tension of the performance. The music complemented the dance rather than worked against it. I think Nancy's movements were big and bold. But I also think she lost her balance a few times. It was a brave attempt.
Len: "well done, full of attack and spirit, but lacked finesse at times"
Bruno: "kind of threw away the shapes but good attempt"
Carrie Ann: "held your own with four male professional dancers"
Scores: 7, 6, 7
My score: 7

11) Tinashe & Brandon
Cha Cha
They toned it down and danced a proper Cha Cha. No big lifts or tricks. It was solid but not as exciting as the New York routine. One thing I noticed was the chemistry was lacking between them in this dance. They each played to the audience, but not to each other as much. So it was still a great routine, but just a tad disappointing compared to the first two. This is Vegas nite and Britney and a Cha Cha. I was looking for some grinding, some dirty, some sexy. Also, their costumes made me think Prince more than Britney, because of the purple.
Bruno: "You got me under your spell, so tidy, so original"
Carrie Ann: "incredible musicality - You generate heat and energy"
Len: "another knock out performance - but a tad bit of sameness"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 8

12) Mary Lou & Sasha
Samba
Oh, those extra dancers were so annoying! Get out of the way!
It was a proper Samba, though not as down and dirty as a Samba should be. The steps were there, but the attitude not so much. They had nice runs and reverse turns. Some probably hated the yellow costumes, but I liked them. Considering her age and all of her past injuries and surgeries, I'm impressed by Mary Lou's speed, precision, and the joy on her face.
Carrie Ann: "nailed it at 50! Clean - you make it look fun and easy"
Len: "that was a proper, proper Samba - I love it - I wish everyone would just come out and dance" (Amen Len!)
Bruno: "party mood, perfect ending for a party night"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

In jeopardy:
John & Emma
Danelle & Artem

Danelle and Artem were eliminated. I'm glad she was on the show, and I hope she goes on to further success in future endeavors.

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Vegas nite recap Part 1 10/2/18

A second full performance night on the second week of competition, Dancing with the Stars? Okay. Let's go!!

1) Juan Pablo & Cheryl
Foxtrot
They wanted the dance to be steamy, and indeed it was. He had a small issue getting her glove off in the beginning of the routine, but I don't think it affected him much. His dancing was light and airy; he doesn't look like a novice dancer. I really enjoy his partnering skills as well. He handles Cheryl well. And can I mention his ass in those tight trousers, and the open shirt? N-I-C-E!
Len: "no problemo - first class - but needed stronger frame and footwork"
Bruno: "opening big in Vegas - almost too hot to trot - retained top notch slickness and elegance" (poor Bruno was tongue-tied, likely due to aforementioned ass and chest)
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 8

2) Milo & Witney
Tango
Awww, he's not old enough for Vegas!
I was worried that he couldn't handle a serious ballroom dance. But he can, and he did! He was all business, game face on, no adorable grin. He had a strong frame, and his partnering skills are ridiculously good for a kid his age. That end move, when he grabbed Witney and pulled her in - HOT!!
Bruno: "You two were on fire - focused, powerful, proper Tango - leading man
Carrie Ann: "I love my job! You have quite a range! This season is redonkulous!"
Len: "very clear and crisp, but your bum was sticking out - nice job though"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 8 (almost a 9)

3) Danelle & Artem
Quickstep
I think it was a great idea to show a simulation of what Danelle can and can't see. It showed the audience that she can't see much of anything - a small circle of  blurry light and shadows. That's it. And she's trying to dance. So of course I applaud her attempt. And I think she's mega courageous. And I am STILL judging her like everyone else. So...the one Quickstep pass that she danced in this routine seemed pretty okay. But that was all she did. The rest of the time she was being led around by troupe members, Donny Osmond, or Artem. I actually think the routine was rather insulting to her. She is an athlete. She can do physical activities. She and Artem need to figure out how she can dance on this show that is at least semi on par with the other contestants. Because she didn't do much dancing in this routine.
Carrie Ann: "first pass was fluid and graceful and elegant" (I think you mean *only* pass Carrie Ann)
Len: "took awhile to get started" (Definitely!)
Bruno: "lucky girl tonight - You enjoyed yourself"
Scores: 7, 6, 6
My score: 6 (based on the one pass that I saw her dance)

4) Alexis & Alan
Salsa
Sometimes the lights were so blinding that it was difficult to see them. But what I was able to see was awesome! Super sexy, cheeky, fun, with very exciting lifts and tricks. At times Alan was tossing her around like he was a Harlem Globetrotter and she was a basketball! They are crazy hot together. I found it ironic that this thin girl with the smokin' bod is dancing to a "big booty" lyric. Anyway, caliente routine! Why is this woman so insecure! She is beautiful and she can dance!
Len: "You went all in - You were working your assets!"
Bruno: "bootylicious and bendy"
Carrie Ann: "flexibility works both for and against you - great lines"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 9

5) John & Emma
Jive
The costumes were silly and the extra dancers irritated me. I'm getting cranky. John's partnering skills were solid, but the routine was light on Jive elements - only a few kicks and flicks, and they weren't stellar. It was a step back for him for me, but not a big step back. The crowd seemed to love it.
Bruno: "four Elvises! So much fun but you lost some Jive in the translation"
Carrie Ann: "You did Elvis proud, but watch your arms"
Len: "big challenge to do two dances"
Scores: 7, 6, 7
My score: 7

6) DeMarcus & Lindsay
Quickstep
I was impressed by the elements of this dance - partnering skills, frame, footwork, speed - and he looked like he was having fun! It was a solid Quickstep, and Quickstep is a tough dance.
Carrie Ann: "careful about your shoulders, moments of out-of-sync-ness"
Len: "arm and hand problems but I liked the dance"
Bruno: "still on a winning streak - dashing"
Scores: 8, 7, 8
My score: 8

Dancing with the Stars New York City week Part 2 10/1/18

7) Tinashe & Brandon
Argentine Tango
Week 2 - what/!?! That was lift/trick-tastic!! Tinashe looked like a professional dancer - almost. There was just a slight hesitation at times. Maybe that's because...IT'S ONLY WEEK 2! That was an extremely ambitious routine at this stage of the competition. While I loved the performance, I have to say there were maybe too many tricks and too little dancing. Definitely not enough Argentine Tango content. But very exciting to watch.
Len: "lifts were spectacular - can't go too far from the heart of the dance - lacked Argentine Tango flavor - but fantastic"
Bruno: "futuristic fantastic - Lady Gaga would kill for it - great extensions"
Carrie Ann: "werk werk werk...so graphic, sharp, strong, futuristic, the bomb!"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 8

8) Milo & Witney
Charleston
That video package was SO fake - "This dance has broken me," "I'm worn out at 9 am." Face plant. Shut up! No one believes you, Milo! Because then you got on that dance floor and set it on fire! Holy cow! You danced those big white sneakers off!! The energy! The exuberance! The daring tricks at warp speed! The musicality! The partnering skills! The entertainment value of that routine - all through the roof! What a thrill that was! Performance of the season so far for me!
Bruno: "exhilarating, bursting with excitement, control, strong, yet light and bouncy"
Carrie Ann: "That was ridiculously exciting for week 2! Amazing, you were fabulous!"
Len: "a lot of Lindy Hop and Charleston, so much energy!"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 9!

9) Mary Lou & Sasha
Waltz
Song: "Natural Woman"
Now that's a dance I expect from a champion like Mary Lou. She was good last week, but she is miles better this week. She danced like she is in it to win it. That was a beautiful waltz - grand, sweeping, great speed, nice chemistry between Mary Lou and Sasha. And she looked lovely, in that red dress with her hair styled. She looked ageless, a very graceful performance.
Carrie Ann: "very special, you opened up and trusted yourself, filled the space"
Len: "lovely, natural performance, but watch your shoulders"
Bruno: "You let yourself go with the flow - but don't lose your neck"
Scores: 8, 7, 7
My score: 8 (almost a 9)

10) Juan Pablo & Cheryl
Quickstep (Broadway-themed)
This routine was high on an entertainment level, with lots of panache and flash. Juan Pablo of course made a dashing leading man, and Cheryl looked like an alluring flapper girl. Their speed could have been better, but I thought it was a solid Quickstep. They didn't nail it, but they absolutely sold it.
Len: "joyful, full of energy, but work on your frame"
Bruno: "smash hit, satisfying, Broadway headliners, with a Gene Kelly leap"
Carrie Ann: "charming and old school, really good"
Scores: 9, 8, 9
My score: 7 (almost an 8)

11) Evanna & Keo
Samba
Werk it, girl! You can tell that this is new to her, especially the New York catwalk attitude, because the fierceness waxed and waned throughout the performance. But when she was on, she was ON!
Lots of Samba content, good speed and energy, outgoing personality at times. She just needs to commit to the character and follow through for the entire routine.
Bruno: "little devil inside and I like it a lot"
Carrie Ann: "wow, inner core strength, fierce"
Len: "proper Samba, terrific"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

12) Bobby & Sharna
Foxtrot
Campy, silly  at times, although I think he was actually trying to play it straight and show respect to the dance, and the city. He just couldn't help going off the rails, and beyond the slated choreography, at the end of the routine. He's such a loose cannon; you don't know what he's going to do. That can be both entertaining and nerve-wracking. Anyway, it wasn't a train wreck. His frame needs work and it looked like he was counting steps at times, but I enjoyed the dance.
Carrie Ann: "still rough around the edges, but authentically joyous, contagious"
Len: "youthful exuberance, but not elegant - You give it all you've got and you sell it"
Bruno: "bonkers and fun"
Scores: 7, 6, 7
My score: 7

Dancing with the Stars New York City week Part 1 10/1/18

New York in the house, dance fans! Let's Go! (Thank you Kaycee from "Big Brother") :)

1) DeMarcus & Lindsay
Foxtrot
"Chocolate piece of steel" - DeMarcus
This dance hit all the marks of a good Foxtrot - nice frame, good rise and fall, and ease of movement. It was light, airy, and DeMarcus had musicality and displayed impressive partnering skills. It was indeed a smooth, elegant dance. The judges loved him last week, while I was skeptical. I'm a fan this week! Great job!
Len: "you nailed the footwork - good last week, better tonight"
Bruno: "Easy does it DeMarcus - look like you've danced all your life"
Carrie Ann: "style, sass, sauce, also elegance and softness, sophistication"
Scores: 8, 8, 8
My score: 8

2) Danelle & Artem
Cha Cha
Once again, I applaud her for giving dancing a go, but I am going to judge her the way I judge any other contestant on this show. I did not see an improvement from last week. She is hesitant. She is unsure of herself. She is obviously having to think about her steps, which means there's little to no fluidity in her movement. I didn't see much Cha Cha content and there was no hip action. Her cane wasn't used in any meaningful way. It might have made sense in a Broadway or Jazz routine, but not in a Cha Cha. Okay, I'll stop now; I can hear booing in my head. And I do feel bad for them that they're both sick.
Bruno: "#1 Respect, #2 Recovered from being on the wrong foot"
Carrie Ann: "Radiance and confidence, but you're counting with your mouth...but amazing"
Len: "great work, clever, carried on from mistake"
Scores: 6, 6, 6
My score: 5

3) John & Emma
Charleston
Extra dancers - stop it!
But overall it was a good performance. Was it a stand out? No. But it was competent. Good musicality and decent speed for a Charleston. The lift at the end was innovative. He struggled a bit to get her up into position, but after that it seemed like he had a solid hold on her.
Carrie Ann: "fantastic, polished, professional, clean, Broadway, showmanship"
Len: "on the right track, great improvement, terrific, but needed more Charleston content"
Bruno: "Grand central spectacular musical - Can I buy a ticket please - first class ride"
Scores: 8, 7, 8
My score: 7

4) Nancy & Val
Cha Cha
Song: "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel
Nancy's costume, hair, and styling were 1000% better this week - She looked young, glamorous, stunning! But the music was odd for a Cha Cha. And the female dancers in the background were distracting and unnecessary. I think Nancy had good speed and musicality, with fast, tight turns, but not enough body contact with Val, and possibly not enough Cha Cha content. Still, I liked it. I was entertained. And I have mentioned how fantastic she looked?
Len: "more relaxed, confident - very good, well done"
Bruno: "my kind of girl - attitude, confidence"
Carrie Ann: "you opened up, got more confident"
Scores: 7, 7, 7
My score: 7

5) Alexis & Alan
Argentine Tango / Ballet
This was basically a fusion dance. It began with the Ballet part, then Alan (finally!) ripped off the tutu and here came the Tango. The dance had a lot of drama and power, and Alexis displayed outrageous flexibility and extension. She was mighty fierce in this routine. She is definitely a contender, and I hope this performance keeps her out of jeopardy.
Bruno: "You were prima argentina - very very very good job"
Carrie Ann: "stunning, except the lift - nailed the tension"
Len: "great mix of precision and passion"
Score: 8, 9, 8
My score: 8

6) Joe & Jenna
Foxtrot
This was a redemption dance? Okay. Um. I guess there was improvement. He didn't just stand there this week and look like a deer in the headlights, so that's something. But the lift was kind of terrifying. He wasn't ready for that move. I wasn't impressed by his frame or footwork. He has a long way to go. But his popularity will likely keep him in the ballroom. Look at all those smiling young women. Sigh.
Carrie Ann: "the one person with no performance experience - transformation - but there was a lift"
Len: "last week caterpillar; this week a butterfly" (Really Len?!)
Bruno: "lovable, endearing, nice lines - need confidence - I can help you go all the way."
Scores: 5, 6, 6
My score: 5

End of Part 1
