"Born This Way" wins an Emmy

Congratulations to the A&E reality show "Born This Way" for winning an Emmy in the category of "Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program."

"Born This Way" is currently in it's second season, and viewership continues to climb. The show was given a second season after the enthusiastic response to the first season, six episode run.

The show follows a group of young people with Down Syndrome as they navigate life and all of it's challenges:  dating, friendships, employment, independence, health, hobbies, and relating to family members.

This a great show: honest, real, emotional, and fun too. You can't help but root for these young people, cheer their successes with them and tear up when life doesn't go their way. For the most part, though, the show is about celebrating their milestones. I enjoy watching Rachel conquer her numerous fears, seeing John take small steps in his music career, marveling at Megan's homegrown clothing company, and witnessing Sean and Steven endure the ups and downs of their first time living on their own. I also think the interactions with the families are so important. I am amazed at how patient and encouraging these parents are. Rachel's parents do so much to help her conquer her myriad of fears. What a joy it was when she made it through her first concert, and not only survived but thrived on an overnight camping trip. Christina's parents encourage her to follow her dreams and pursue her hobbies; this season she is taking ballroom dance lessons so she can enter a "Dancing with the Stars" type competition. And Elena's parents endeavor to find a solution to her difficult behaviors and delicate emotional state. The show is full of heart and humor, and I look forward to it every week.
