Big Brother - My Thoughts on the Top Three

Wow! What a difference a few days makes. And what a disappointing top three this is turning out to be. A final two of Xavier and Kyland would have been epic. A few days ago, Xavier and Kyland were in my opinion the two people who most deserved to be in the finale. I understand that Kyland was blindsided, but his reaction, and the way he talked to Xavier about Xavier's nephew, was uncalled for. That was probably the most uncomfortable eviction I have ever seen on Big Brother. I was afraid they were going to have to call security to break up Kyland and Xavier.

When it comes to Big D, unfortunately I have lost any respect I had for him. The way he treated Azah was also uncalled for. Big D has carried Azah through this whole game, really? I'm sorry, but honestly, neither Big D or Azah deserve to be in the final two. Xavier pulled off a great Survivor blindside, and he will go to the final two with a contestant who does not deserve to be there, which will likely guarantee his win. As long as there is not a nightmare scenario, where Big D and Azah end up as the final two. Please no. It will be embarrassing to see either one plead their case to the jury that they should win this season.

I understand that there had to be drama, and that's why we saw Big D struggle with his decision. But his comments made him look so bad. I wish X had taken Big D's power away, and let Azah make the big move. Azah had nothing to lose at that point.

So now who is my vote for favorite houseguest? Little D I guess. I'm so disappointed by Big D and Azah. And Kyland.

Flow State

I watched a webinar for work about flow states.

In simple terms, a flow state is an activity that you get so immersed in, you can lose track of time.

It is about embracing an experience.

Flow states are beneficial for mental health and help keep your brain active.

Flow states can provide a welcome break from anxiety and depression, and are tools to boost motivation, confidence, and a positive self-image.

Flow states can be work or school related, or extracurricular.

What are some of your flow states?

I'll list a few of mine:
Reading a good book
Games like sudoku, brain age, and word games
Journaling / blogging
Making Shutterfly books
Making Power Point presentations for work

Dancing with the Stars Season 30, Episode 1 9/20/21

Season 3-0!!! Wow! How did that happen?

SO happy the ballroom is back! And what a premiere! These contestants can dance!! I am amazed!

I'm not going to go through and talk about every contestant, because especially tonight that would be redundant. Fourteen of the fifteen stars all showed promise to go far in the competition. That has never happened as far as I can recall.

My top three are all ladies, but likely not the three that you are expecting to me to say, based on judges scores.

I have chosen Amanda Kloots, Melora Hardin, and Olivia Jade as my top three of the night, with Melanie C as a close fourth.

So why didn't I choose Suni and JoJo, who got two of the highest scores?

With regard to Suni, there is no doubt that she would win the technical score of the episode. Suni's Jive was flawless when it came to steps and footwork, but it was lacking in entertainment. Derek said it best: "less precision, more expression." I find this an issue with several of the gymnasts that have been on the show. Their performances are often close to perfect with regard to technique, but they sometimes lack personality and showmanship.

JoJo and Jenna made history as the first same sex partnership on DWTS, and I am here for it! They did not make my top three because I found their routine to be over the top and manic. A Quickstep is supposed to be fast, but that was like a Quickstep on steroids. It was all a little too much - the music, the lights, it was very hectic. I think they both had too much adrenaline, and that caused Jenna to slip. No, that was not choreographed. I was surprised that picky Carrie Ann gave her highest score to a couple that had a partner who fell. So I am all for J&J, I am excited that history was made, but I can't put them in my top 3 tonight.

The men were not bad (all but one anyway); they just were not as strong as the women. But I see much potential in most of them.

Some of my favorite things about nite one:

The music.

The matchy/matchy, colorful costumes.

The excitement and enthusiasm.

The audience is back!

How strong the partnerships are, especially for week one.

Derek's bitchy comments to Len.

And Bruno being Bruno, standing up after every routine to emphasize his critiques.

Added bonus: Tyra didn't annoy me.

My only pet peeve: Couples who are dating should not be paired together. I think that COULD give Sharna and Brian Austin Green an unfair advantage. Also, Sharna should not be a blond. She is beautiful no matter what, but I think she is extra stunning as a redhead.

That's all I've got dance fans.

Much love and excitement for this season!

Emmys 2021

It was an up and down night at the Emmys for me. Happy and sad.

Happy for the Crown. Sad for Pose and This is Us.

Happy for Olivia Coleman. Sad for MJ Rodriguez.

Happy for Josh O'Conner. Sad for Billy Porter and Sterling K Brown.

Yay for Ru Paul's Drag Race!

Yay for Gillian Anderson!

Congrats to Debbie Allen for her Governor's Award.

For the most part I adored the fashion. Lots of color and flattering silhouettes.

My pet peeve: long speeches. If the music is playing, that means you're out of time. Wrap it up. You know you don't have all the time you want to talk. Plan accordingly. You might have the most amazing acceptance speech ever created, but when you go over, you are potentially taking time away from another winner, and making the show longer. Don't be selfish. Even if you think there's no way you'll win, write a speech and practice it. The audience, your fellow nominees, and everyone behind the scenes will thank you. The only person who deserved to complain about the music was Debbie Allen. Special award recipients should not be "played off" unless their speech is excessive. Hers was not IMO.

My second pet peeve: Conan O'Brian. His first grab for attention was mildly amusing. Crashing Stephen Colbert's acceptance speech was overkill, and super annoying. I bet the guy he was frantically hugging wanted to punch him. Conan, dude, try some meditation or something. You were too extra last night.

Okay, sorry, one more thing. CBS had promised they would make the stage accessible by putting in a ramp. They didn't. As far as I know, there were no nominees that are wheelchair users. But you don't have to be a wheelchair user to benefit from a ramp. What about all the people in those long gowns? What about the older nominees and presenters? What about Paralympian and double amputee Jessica Long? Stages should be accessible at all events, and I'm not talking about some ramp or lift in the backstage area.

Okay. Rant done. Overall, I did enjoy the show. Cedric was entertaining.

Big Brother - My Thoughts on the Top 4

I'm still one episode behind.

I just watched the second double eviction nite.

Yay for Tiffany being the first member of the cookout to leave the party!

As far as Azah's decision to nominate Xavier and Hannah - well, if her hope was to have a woman win BB, she blew it with those nominations. Did she really think that one of the men was going to vote out their own so she, Azah, could break the tie? C'mon! Putting Hannah on the block was as good as sending her home right then and there. If neither she nor Hannah won POV, Hannah was going home. Period.

But of course I could see Azah's dilemma. She and Big D have been tight since Day One. She could not put him on the block. And she made a promise to Ky that she did not feel she could break. So X and Hannah had to go up.

But it all worked out fine for what I wanted. From a personality standpoint, X, Ky, Azah, and Big D are the final four that I'm happiest with. Xavier and Kyland should be the final two, and Azah and Big D should be two people in the running for America's favorite houseguest. If I were thinking about who should be the final four based on how good they are at playing the game - I would probably say X, Ky, Tiff, and SB. Little D was also a good player, and very likeable. I would not be disappointed to see Little D win favorite houseguest. Hannah came on strong towards the end, but for too much of the game she was in the background in my opinion.

Big Brother - My Thoughts on the Cookout alliance

First of all, this post won't be too spoilery, because I am still three episodes behind. But I wanted to say something about the Cookout Alliance. And what I want to say is, congratulations to the Cookout! They have made history by having the final six contestants all be persons of color.

I know the Cookout is controversial. Why does the game have to be about race this year? The thing is, there would be no need for the cookout if Big Brother did not have a lack of diversity in the seasons, and when there were minority members in a season, they were usually picked off early in the game. That is why the Cookout was created, and I for one am very glad that it was successful. See a need. Be the change.

I give a lot of credit to the success of the cookout to players like Aza and Xavier, who had to sacrifice their personal games in order to keep the cookouts safe. I am relieved that the Cookout survived considering how much Tiffany try to destroy it with her selfish game play.

So who should win and who do I want to win? I think Xavier should win, and I would be very happy but that outcome. I hope that either Aza or Big D win favorite houseguest. Based on challenges and gameplay, I do not think either of them deserve to win, but I would love to see them win favorite houseguest. They have been so great to watch this season, funny and caring and dedicated to the Cookout.

Not Being Ok

There is a certain peace that comes with being able to admit that you're not okay and having the bravery to share that with others.

The struggle to be okay is often the problem and not the solution.

Just admit it.
To yourself and others.
Make peace with your situation.

It really can help you feel better.

And it will remind you that you won't always feel this way.

Life does get better.

And remember that self-care strategies really can help.

Drink some water.
Eat some protein.
Take a shower.
Get out in nature.
Get lost in an activity.
Find your purpose.
Connect with someone.

The people who care about you will understand.
You might find that someone you care about is struggling too.
Helping them will help you.

No one is okay all the time.
Everyone goes through something.
And then they get better.
You will too.

The Olympics

Originally this post was going to be about gold versus silver medals - how the media seems to love to say, "So and so lost the gold medal" instead of saying, "They won the silver medal." And this post is about that. Because that is important. These athletes train for years for this event, or series of events, that only happens once every few years. Many of them never win a single medal. But they can still say proudly that they made it to the Olympics. Maybe they finished eighth, tenth, fifteenth in their sport or event. But that is tenth..in...the...world! They are all elite athletes, and they should all be celebrated for their accomplishments. Of course everyone wants to win gold. Everyone wants to be at the top. But silver, bronze, and even finishes off the podium should receive recognition and deserve praise. Michelle Kwan said it best: "I didn't lose the gold. I WON the silver."

I have seen so much good sportsmanship at these Olympics and it has truly warmed my heart. Gymnastic teams congratulating each other, hugs all around. Even hugs and high fives for a member of another team just for completing a routine. Swimmers reaching across the ropes in the pool to embrace, raising each other's arms in the air. Two male high jumpers immediately agreeing to share gold when their efforts resulted in a tie. The athletes come from different countries, they have different customs and traditions, but they can all speak the language of respect and admiration for hard work and accomplishments.

And now let's talk about Simone Biles for a minute. Simone Biles, the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) of female gymnastics. Simone Biles, who had so much pressure going into these Olympics because she is the GOAT, had the intelligence and the inner fortitude to step back, to withdraw, so she did not risk physically injuring herself or keeping her teammates out of medal contention. And she has received some flak from her decision. But you know who hasn't criticized her decision? Anyone who has ever been a gymnast. Because they get it. Gymnasts understand the stress and the rigorous training and the "twisties" - when your mind and your body are out of whack and you don't know where your body is when you try to land and you risk serious damage to your body. They get it.

What Simone did should be a lesson for us all. Listen to what your mind and body are telling you. Do what is right and safe for you. Make decisions that are in your best interest. The haters will hate. But the people who matter will love you and be thankful that you are alive and in one piece. And the example of self-care and mental health that you displayed will inspire millions, and likely save some lives in the process. That is what Simone did at these Olympic games.

Exercise Works

I have seen people say that if you have osteoporosis, exercise can be beneficial in maintaining your bone density, but won't improve it. Only medicine will regrow bone.

I hope my story and test results prove otherwise.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis about 15 years ago. In addition to being on birth control and now hormone replacement therapy, I also was on Forteo for two years and I have had one Reclast infusion. So I am on medication to treat the condition.

During 2019, I exercised, but I was not consistent with arm exercises and strength training. I was focused on walking and balance exercises. My arm exercises are hard for me, and it was easy for me to skip them and say, "Maybe I will do them tomorrow."

In 2020, I had a bone density test just before COVID hit. I had slight gains in my hips, but lost a bit of bone in my arms. So I made a commitment to do my arm exercises every day. I have a set of one pound pink dumbbells (of course they are pink), and I do various exercises for about five minutes per day. Plus I do aspects of daily living that use my arms, like unloading the dishwasher, washing dishes, taking out the trash, etcetera.

I was successful in my goal. I did my arm exercises every day except when I got my COVID vaccines. I was the most consistent I've ever been with exercise during the pandemic, because I was working from home, and had both the time and the energy to work out.

I had a bone density test in April of this year. The results were a big surprise to me and my doctor. The bone density in my arms increased by 6.2 percent!! That is a significant increase. I was so pleased. Because the test results were good and I did not show any decline, I was able to avoid a Reclast infusion for another year. My hips only showed a very slight increase, so I am trying to do some yoga poses in addition to my usual leg exercises to improve the bone density in my hips. I need to be more consistent with the yoga.

Since the test I have not been as consistent with the arm exercises. Starting back to work has made me more tired. I was also on vacation during the week before I went back to work, so I missed a few days then. When I miss a day, I try to do the exercises twice the next day, but that doesn't always happen.

I try not to get upset with myself when I miss a day. I believe the exercises are definitely helping, and I am doing them as often as I can. I believe that any movement is beneficial. You don't have to use dumbbells and other exercise equipment. If one pound weights are too heavy, you can try a water bottle or a can of soup. Start out slow but steady, and give yourself praise and encouragement for your progress.

Exercise, or movement, can make a difference in your overall physical and emotional health.

"Be on Time" Chronicles

It's the return of the "Be on Time" Chronicles!

I am back at the library three days a week. The schedule started in July. So far it is working well. I am at the library on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and then I work from home on Tuesday and Thursday.

Wednesday morning was going very well. I had plenty of time to do my bed exercises, take a good shower, and do my usual morning routine. At the appointed time of my ride I was standing outside waiting. It was a warm, humid summer morning, but not hot yet. All was well.

And then I felt it.

Or I thought I did.

Something was crawling on me.

And then I felt the familiar sting.

There was likely an ant.

Maybe even a fire ant.

In my pants.

Specifically, in my underwear.

Instantly I had a flashback to my childhood.

I was about eleven years old. I was in Sunday School. It was a pretty day, and the teacher had the wonderful idea to hold class outside. We were sitting on the ground, and evidently I sat in an ant pile. My teacher rushed me back into the building, and we went in an office - I don't know which one. I do know that an older boy was in the office because he was in trouble for something. My teacher ordered him out of the office so we could pull my pants down and get the ants off me. That boy of course went back to his class and announced, "I was sent back because a little girl had ants in her pants." The story spread through the Sunday School as fast as the ants that invaded my pants.

Standing outside on Wednesday, I was in a quandary. I could not go back inside without the possibility of missing my ride. And I certainly couldn't pull my pants down in the apartment complex parking lot.

So I decided to just let the ant enjoy his / her breakfast, and hope he / she was satisfied after a nibble or two. I tend to get big welts and suffer intense itching when I am stung by ants or mosquitos, but I don't have a severe reaction like trouble breathing.

Luckily this situation was not as extensive as that day in Sunday School. My ride came, and I made it to work. I had some itching, but nothing unbearable.

At least a bird didn't poop on me.

"Shameless" series finale - My Thoughts

I watched the finale two nights ago.

Was it a satisfying ending for me?

No.

I think the show should have ended with the last episode of the previous season - at Mickey and Ian's wedding. Except for Lip falling off the wagon, which is a big except of course, the rest of the episode was funny, joyous, upbeat. Everyone was happy - about as positive as you get in Gallagher land. And we even had hope for Lip, because he realized right away what he did, and got himself to a meeting ASAP.

What did we get this season?

More of Debbie being a terrible mother and all around crappy person.

Lip continuing to struggle. The look on his face when Tami told she might be pregnant was heartbreaking. Seeing him get a job delivering food was depressing.

Ian and Mickey were trying to get somewhere, but Mickey's anger issues and reluctance to grow and change were dragging them down. I have absolutely no problem with gay men becoming fathers. I do have a problem with Mickey being a dad.

Carl - I think it's great he became a cop. Being reduced to a meter maid  - not so much. And was he going to be a dad or not? I hate that that storyline was left hanging.

Speaking of left hanging - did Kev and V sell the Alibi and move to Kentucky, or not?

I'm not surprised that Frank died, and that he passed with only a nurse to provide comfort. It would not have been consistent with the show to see the family gathered at his bedside, wringing their hands and wiping their eyes. Their indifference as they watched him barely breathing after a heroin overdose made perfect sense. But the fact that COVID was what took him - not the alcoholism, drug use, or dementia, that was unsettling to me. And knowing the whole family had been exposed but was partying at the Alibi when they all should have been in quarantine - that was super unsettling.

It's not that I expected a happy ending for the show. These are the Gallagher's. They struggle. Life doesn't go their way. But I was hoping for at least a little good news. Some rays of hope. The kids were all singing at the end, arms wrapped around each other, as the rich guy's car burned and Frank slowly floated away. But my heart was heavy. I wasn't celebrating.

This Week in Texas

I was watching the ABC evening national news, and David Muir uttered a sentence I never dreamed I would hear: "A humanitarian crisis is currently unfolding in Texas..."

Let that sink in for a minute.
A humanitarian crisis.

There have been plenty of natural disasters in the United States in my lifetime.
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Harvey
Earthquakes
Fires
Tornadoes

But I don't know that the news media have ever used the term "humanitarian crisis" to describe a natural disaster in the United States.

Maybe they did, and I just wasn't listening.

Katrina and Harvey each certainly did cause a humanitarian crisis.

But the term always makes me think of a third world country.

Texas became a third world country this week.

At the beginning of the week, the main concern was the homeless population. They were the vulnerable ones. Exposed to the elements that were going to become extreme.

The rest of us had shelter, electricity, heat, water, and food.
We would be okay.
We would stay safe.

And then circumstances changed.

Suddenly tens of thousands of "safe" Texans were in the dark.
No lights.
Many with no heat source.
Some experienced broken pipes.
Then many more lost running water.

In the span of a day or two, "safe" Texans lost perishable food and drinking water.
Some people resorted to melting and drinking snow, or at least using it to flush their toilets.

Many grocery stores were closed, and those that were open quickly ran out of food and bottled water.
Literally nothing on the shelves.

Austin issued a boil water notice.
That led to this sad meme on social media (paraphrasing): "I'll boil my non-existent water with my imaginary heat source in my house with no power."

Yep
A humanitarian crisis.
In the United States of America.
In the year 2021.

An Unbelievable Week

It has been an unprecedented week in Texas.

People who have lived in the state for decades have never seen anything like it.

Everything that could go wrong has for too many people.

This has been a horrendous week for so many.
Scary
Frustrating
Excruciating
Traumatizing

Usually Texans are excited by snow, because we rarely see it.

Often we only get a dusting at the most.
It comes and goes.
We take pictures and video.
We revel in the small flakes, some of which don't even make it to the ground.

We have had to contend with ice storms.
That is not such a rare occurrence.
Sometimes life grounds to a halt for a day or two, maybe three.

But we have never seen anything like this.
Multiple rounds of snow and ice.
Days of treacherous roads.
Temperatures in the single digits with wind chills below zero.
Truly life threatening conditions.
But there's more.
Millions of people have been without power for days, either because of damage to power lines or the failure of our state's independent electrical grid.
Frozen pipes have busted.
People have lost water for other reasons.
Grocery stores have had to close.
Trucks can't get through to deliver supplies, so the stores that are open have empty shelves.
People are running out of food and water.
Some shelters have been set up, but they are hard to access because of the road conditions.

And we can't forget, COVID is still an issue.

First responders are working overtime dealing with:
Car accidents
Stranded drivers
Falls
House fires
Carbon monoxide poisonings

I did my best to prepare.
The one good aspect of my anxiety is that it makes me prepare.
I ordered two food deliveries.
I filled the bathtub with water for flushing the toilets.
I filled containers for drinking water.

I was particularly successful.
We are okay on food.
But we don't have enough water.
I didn't reserve enough.
I didn't think about how many reasons you need water:
Drinking
Washing hands
Brushing teeth
Washing dishes

We have lost water and heat
We are exceedingly fortunate to still have power.

It's scary.
Really nerve-wracking.
It's not like we can just drive to the store to get water.
And we can't go to a shelter because of the roads, and because of COVID.

We will be okay.
We will get through it.

I am learning to be resourceful.
I am learning to handle scary situations.

I still want to get excited by snow.
I don't want this experience to change that.

Television Can Be Educational

Experts say that television rots your brain.

I disagree.

I think television can make you think.

It depends on if you are watching to zone out, or if you are watching to learn something.

I do both.

Some shows I watch just for enjoyment.

Other shows I watch for pleasure and to learn.

Occasionally a program that I'm not expecting to teach me anything actually does!

This happened last night, with the Ryan Murphy show "911 Lone Star."

The fictional show about first responders is set in Austin.

I've often giggled over the depiction of the majority of Austinites walking around in cowboy hats and spending their nights line dancing in clubs.

And then there was the episode where twin EF5 tornadoes tore up downtown.

When I was watching last night, (spoilers!), a volcano wreaked havoc in the city, spewing lava and injuring people. I burst out laughing. C'mon Ryan. A volcano?

Turns out I needed a history lesson.

Austin DOES have a volcano! An inactive one...but still, we have a volcano!

Pilot Knob: Pilot Knob: Largest Extinct Volcano Remaining in Central Texas (texashillcountry.com)

I have officially been educated.

By the way, next week (spoiler #2)  is about a wildfire.

That actually happened - not in San Angelo, but in Smithville, near Austin, and the surrounding area, several years ago. It was quite devastating.

Bee Gees documentary

I watched the HBO documentary about the Bee Gees yesterday.

I was a pre-teen in the 70's, and a teenager in the 80's, and I remember the disco era and "Saturday Night Fever" very well.

What struck me the most about their story, besides the great music, was how much the band persevered, and their ability to be adaptable and resilient in the music industry.

They were brothers with a dream to make it in the music industry, and they made it happen. They got their start making Beatles-type music in the 60's, and they were successful. But they became mega-stars when they moved to America and adopted a completely different sound - an intoxicating mix of the R&B music that they always loved, combined with the dance music popular in the gay and black club scenes. Disco was born, and it catapulted the Bee Gees to super stardom.

But when disco became unpopular (to put it mildly), they were able to keep their careers going by writing hit songs for big stars - Barbra Streisand, Dolly Parton & Kenny Rodgers, and Celine Dion in particular.

They went through hard times as a band of brothers. There were creative differences, and personality clashes. Barry and Robin often fought over singing lead. Maurice had to deal with being in the middle. They broke up as a band. They got back together. But the bond was always there.

I learned in the documentary that Robin and Maurice are twins. I never knew that. Barry and Andy look more like twins, even though they are the oldest and youngest.

The Bee Gees boys had what it takes to succeed in life and in your chosen career - talent, creativity, dedication, and resiliency.

Winter Wonderland

I refer to last Sunday as "The Snow Day of My Dreams."

I was born in Florida and grew up in several cities in Texas. From the time I was ten until I moved away to attend graduate school, I lived in Houston. I've seen snow a few times during my life, but usually we didn't get much more than a few flakes. Sometimes if you blinked, you missed the snow. Forecasters, especially in Central and Southeast Texas, tend to hype the possibility of snow, leaving many residents disappointed when the white stuff does not appear.

We were not disappointed in Central Texas on Sunday.

We got snow.

And I mean S-N-O-W!

Hours of it.

Quite a bit of it. A few inches at least.

I've learned not to get my hopes up. But when I saw it coming down, I was so excited. I didn't know how long it would last, so I threw on clothes and ran outside, not bothering to even brush my hair or wash my face (and you can tell in the pictures.)

I didn't care.

I was finally getting my snow day.

It snowed from about 9 am until 4 pm. Some of it was quite heavy. I was out several times, taking pictures and video, documenting as the outside turned white.

It was absolutely beautiful.

I was mesmerized.

I didn't make a snowman, or any snowballs. I didn't walk in it much. I was still afraid of falling, even though it wasn't icy. But that was okay. I didn't dream of making snowmen or snowballs. I simply dreamed of watching beautiful, white flakes falling from the sky. And that is what I had the opportunity to witness.

This South-Central Texas girl was very, very happy.

Dancing with the Stars Finale Part Two 11/23/20

Freestyles!!

Nelly & Daniella
As I have done before in their performances, I would give Daniella a 10 for this routine, and Nelly about an 8. He just did not do enough in this freestyle to earn a higher grade. I have to say the first lift was not successful, but the second one was quite daring, and they pulled that one off. But the rest, I mean Nelly looked happy and relaxed, but what did he really do in this freestyle? I was disappointed.
My score: 8
My score: 10, 10, 10
Really? Did we watch the same dance? Did they get a 10 for that one lift? I know it's customary to give the freestyle a 10, but not always. I think the judges were trying to legitimize Nelly as a finalist (and possible winner)

Kaitlyn & Artem
Great energy, lots of personality and pizzazz - the most personality I've seen from Kaitlyn all season. A very entertaining freestyle. Lots of tricks and all well-executed. Good job!
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Nev & Jenna
Jenna wanted it to be a celebration and it definitely was. Bruno said that Kaitlyn's performance was like a showcase of Dancing with the Stars, but I would say that the showcase was this performance. It had a little bit of everything: Broadway and ballroom. And if you ask me Nev is Broadway bound and hopefully Mirrorball trophy bound as well. It was more unique than a traditional Broadway routine. I was very impressed.
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Justina & Sasha
Awww, it seemed short! I wanted more! Not that the routine was lacking, I just wanted it to go on longer because I was having so much fun. It was the perfect music for her, the perfect color for her outfit, and the perfect dance styles for her. It was a celebration of Justina, and all that we love about her and admire her for. I have absolutely adored watching her this season. Muy caliente chica! Girl Power!!
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

And the winner is...
Kaitlyn and Artem

Thanks for a great season DWTS!

Scores:

Dancing with the Stars Finale Part One 11/23/20

I am only recapping the performances of the finalists.

Before I start, I'll say that Nev should win, and I hope he does win.
I predict that Kaitlyn or Nelly will win.
Overall, it has been a fantastic season. There were at least 6 serious contenders for the Mirrorball trophy: Nev, Kaitlyn, Justina, Johnny, Skai, and Jeanine.

Memorable Dances round:

Kaitlyn & Artem
Argentine Tango
The judges were gaga (hehe) the first time they saw this routine, and I think they will be just as impressed this time. Her frame is impeccable, her movements sharp and precise, and I felt more intention, more determination this time. And her body in that revealing costume is sickening (that's a compliment, by the way)
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Nelly & Daniella
Samba
Interesting that they did not do the Jive, which was hands down his best dance of the season. This was an enjoyable routine - Nelly looked like he was having a blast and he was very relaxed and loose out there. He was grooving and moving his hips, but it didn't look like a Samba to me. It looked more like an R&B feel. And at moments his timing was off.
My score: 9
Score: 9, 9, 9

Nev & Jenna
Paso Doble
Carrie Ann said it perfectly with one word: artist. Nev is an artist. That routine was ablaze with artistry, theatricality, and musicality. He is a showman. Every moment is thought out and intentional and passionate. A masterclass for DWTS competitors.
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Justina & Sasha
Cha Cha
For me, she was a WOW from day one, and just as much of one tonight. She is a natural on that dance floor. So charismatic, so much musicality, she is completely infectious. And that routine was loaded with Cha Cha. She shook everything her Mami gave her, and had a blast doing it. Go Girl!!
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

A Reminder

 Sometimes I forget

And need to remind myself

That it gets better.

It always gets better.

One day is rough

Sometimes two days in a row

But then it gets better.

And usually an entire day isn't bad

One or two agonizing hours in a twenty four day does not and should not ruin the memory of what the day was

Look for the light even in the bleakest moments

And believe that brighter times are just around the corner

Dancing with the Stars Semi-Finals Recap Part 2 11/16/20

Justina & Sasha
Contemporary
That was beautiful - light, airy, they made the lifts look effortless. It has been a joy to watch their partnership and her journey unfold.
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 10, 10
Her first perfect score!!!

Skai & Alan
Viennese Waltz
Her frame and movements were so beautiful, and this one of the most emotional performances from Skai. I felt it and I could tell she was feeling it. Gorgeous choreography from Alan. So mature and lush and graceful. I loved every second of it. Skai has had some rough moments and some wonderful moments on this show. This routine was her best for me.
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Johnny & Britt
Jazz
I have so enjoyed their journey as well. I love Johnny and Britt together. Johnny displayed very strong partnering skills in this routine, and they were so in sync. You can tell that Johnny is fighting for his place in the finals.
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Nev & Jenna
Contemporary
This show is known for amazing partnerships, but so many in one season. That routine was absolutely exquisite. Every movement filled with intent and meaning and emotion. Simply stunning. Nev is in it to win it and has been since day one. He is the most consistent dancer across all genres. He excels at all of them.
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Nelly & Daniella
Jive
The preview worked to lower our expectations I think, but for me Nelly coped quite well with the Jive. The song was a Jive classic. Nelly was pretty light on his feet, with good kicks and flicks. Daniella kept the routine simple but with plenty of content, which I think enhanced the effectiveness. I was entertained.
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 10, 10
Are they trying to justify him possibly making it to the finals? I have not skipped ahead, so I don't know. I think it was definitely his best dance, but....

Kaitlyn & Artem
Contemporary
Honestly, I haven't felt much during Kaitlyn's dances this season, and I haven't seen what the judges have seen in her, but I did in this dance. I have to be a little picky and say some of the transitions were not seamless enough for me. But the emotion was definitely there. Beautiful lifts and partnering too. Lovely dance
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Eliminated:
Johnny & Britt
Skai & Alan
So tough.
Such an amazing season.
Love them all.

Congrats to the Final Four.

Dancing with the Stars Semi-Finals 11/16/20

Double Elimination Nite too.
Here we go

Part 1: Redemption Round

Skai & Alan
Cha Cha
SO good! Way to go Skai! Lots of Cha Cha content! And she looked relaxed and happy. Her steps were precise, but I didn't have the robot Disney princess feeling that I sometimes get with Skai. It wasn't the most exciting routine, but it was clean and strong and well-danced. And they didn't overload the routine with tricks.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Justina & Sasha
Tango
Between terrible camera angles and absolutely disastrous lighting, I could barely see the dance. I think Sasha stood out more than Justina in this routine, which is not the way a routine should be on this show. She is the competitor. The choreography should be highlighting her and letting her shine as a dancer. I think her frame was good and she displayed some passion and attack, but not as much as Sasha.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 10, 9
Yay she FINALLY got a 10!!

Johnny & Britt
Salsa
Very strong partnering skills from Johnny, including a unique lift. He had his hips going, but I wanted more. You need to get down and dirty with the Salsa. This was a decent routine. He is a strong dancer and deserves to be in the finals. But it wasn't an outstanding dance.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Nelly & Daniella
Paso Doble
Dancing with no shirt shouldn't automatically get you a high score. Nelly had some nice shapes, but he needed way more attack in this routine. I don't want to see grinning in a Paso. I don't want to watch his partner doing the hard work to make the routine look good. I want to see fire and passion. I want to see someone who is doing everything in his power to make it to the finals.
My score: 8
Scores: 9, 8, 9

Nev & Jenna
Foxtrot
He had unfortunate competition from overly bright lighting, but Nev overcame it. That was an absolutely delicious dance. I loved how they took their time and made every step purposeful and meaningful, but not at all slow or plodding. It was all about gracefulness, refinement, and maturity. Just gorgeous.
My score: 10
Scores: 10, 10, 10
So deserved!!

Kaitlyn & Artem
Paso Doble
Seemed kind of short. She definitely had more attack than Nelly, but I still wanted to see more. She looked beautiful, and her movements were very precise. Overall a strong routine, but not a wow moment for me.
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Making a Decision

Decision making has never been easy for me.

I struggle.

What is best for me?

How will others react to the choices I make?

What if my decision makes someone angry, or sad, or disappointed?

What if I lose people because of what I decide to do in a given situation?

How many people should I ask for advice, and what happens when everyone gives me a different answer? Whose voice do I listen to? Mine? Someone else's? And what do I do when Tom is mad at me because I took John's advice instead of his?

Life is hard.

I made a difficult decision today. It was not the choice I wanted to make. But I know it is the right one. The safe one. I did not ask for anyone's advice. I weighed the options and even though I struggled, I knew the whole time what choice I needed to make. Even though I didn't want to make it, because it means continued isolation. It means having to say no to something fun and spending time with friends. I value my friends and I don't want to lose them because it's not safe for me to be around them. I have to not let fear of losing them cause me to make a potentially unsafe choice. I have to be strong and do what it best for me and believe that my friendships are secure and enduring and will still be there when the pandemic is over.

I have waited this long.

I can hold on for a few more months.

So even though I feel sad, I also feel confident that I have made the right decision.

Mostly I feel relieved to finally have reached a conclusion. I don't have to wrestle with myself about it anymore. And I figured it out by myself.

Dancing with the Stars Icons Nite 11/9/20

Justina & Sasha
Icon: Madonna
Rumba
Interesting fashion choice. Usually the woman is in a flowy dress for a rumba . So that kind of threw me. I think there was good Rumba content, and I think Justina and Sasha have great chemistry. I've been so accustomed to Justina doing more high energy Latin dances, so this was a little slow for me, but I think she did very well. I just found it a tad boring. And Madonna is NEVER boring.
My score: 9
Scores: 8,8,8

Nelly & Daniella
Icon: Tupac
Jazz
I think about what Carrie Ann says, "Don't dance small." That's what Nelly does. He dances small. Careful. He doesn't break loose. He has musicality, but he's not completely feeling the music. Even Daniella seemed to be holding back. Weird. That dance could have been off the chain, but it wasn't. It was just okay. Not memorable. Not exciting. I wanted to say "Wow" and I didn't, except the back flip.
My score: 8
Scores: 8,8,8

AJ & Cheryl
Icon: Freddie Mercury
Viennese Waltz
Um - I think AJ was really off on this one. The beginning was terrible. I don't know what happened, but he was stumbly and really off on timing and rhythm. He did better in the middle part of the dance. Overall, though, I just didn't love the choreography. This was just a miss for me. Love Freddie though. Don't give up AJ.
My score: 7
Scores: 7,8,8

Kaitlyn & Artem
Icon: Britney Spears
Argentine Tango
First of all, Kaitlyn's outfit - wowsa! But as for the dance, it's the continuation of what the judges have said about her - her moves are technically very strong, very precise, but she lacks pop, attack, a wow factor. Britney is a rather weak singer, but she's a great dancer. Her moves pop. She accentuates every move. There is intention, determination. I don't feel that with Kaitlyn.
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 10, 10
Evidently it's just me....

Johnny & Britt
Icon: Amy Winehouse
Quickstep
Looked like a strong Quickstep to me. Fast, good footwork, they really covered the ballroom. Johnny was definitely feeling the music.
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 10, 10

Skai & Alan
Icon: Janet Jackson
Paso Doble
I wish the lights weren't so blinding, but anyway....
Skai pretty much nailed it, but I would have liked to see just a hair more attack. But she looked fantastic, her shaping was excellent, it was very close to a terrific routine. I could see Alan working her to be forceful, but she was just a bit hesitant.
My score: 9 (almost 10)
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Nev & Jenna
Icon: Elton John
Jive
He is SO good!! What a showman! Nev can do it all - fun, comedy, sexy, maturity - and he makes it all look so easy. That routine looked like it was part of a Broadway musical. Enjoyable, high energy from beginning to end.
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Dance Offs
Nev & Jenna don't have to do the Dance Off

Kaitlyn & Artem v Justina & Sasha
Cha Cha
First of all, not totally fair because of the social distancing, Justina and Sasha were in the back, and Kaitlyn & Artem were in the front. But for the most part the camera captured both couples. I would give the edge to Justina and Sasha because of their energy and Justina's musicality, but the judges will likely say Kaitlyn was technically stronger.
Judges: split decision but Justina and Sasha took it.

Skai & Alan v Nelly & Daniella
Salsa
That was the BEST I have seen Nelly dance all season! Good for him! But Skai was fantastic and she should win. That was very exciting!
Skai & Alan won.

AJ & Cheryl v Johnny & Britt
Jive
SO CLOSE! They were equally great. Very hard to decide, but I would give it to Johnny by a hair. Really super close.
Wow, AJ won!

Bottom 2:
Johnny & Britt and AJ & Cheryl
Eliminated: AJ & Cheryl
Very sad to see AJ go. ☹️

Brain Games

I love to play games. Board games, card games, electronic games, games on my phone - I enjoy them all. Sometimes I get nervous when I'm trying to learn a new game - I tend to play games that I already know and especially like to play games that I am good at.

I've been watching webinars and reading articles about the importance of brain health, and how playing games and other activities may help to ward off Alzheimer's and dementia. Research shows that learning new activities is better for your brain than activities that you do frequently. For example, crossword puzzles are good, but if you do them a lot, you should take the time to switch things up and include learning a new skill. Cooking, dancing, playing an instrument, and studying a new language are very beneficial activities for your brain. So is writing.

I have a phone app called Mind Games Pro that I really enjoy. I don't work for the company, and it's a free app anyway, so I'm not trying to sell anyone anything. There are about 40 games on the app; some examples are math operations and vocabulary power, and other games work on memory and attention and other concepts. Usually there are certain games that I like the best, and I tend to play those and ignore the games that I am not good at. But remembering the research, I have started having the app pick the game for me, called the Training Center, because that makes me play the games that I am not as good at, so maybe I can improve at those games, and exercise my brain more. That was a total run-on sentence, but anyway...

The other day the app made me play a game called mental rotation. It's hard to explain, but the game gives you two images, or shapes, and you have to decide quickly if the shapes are the same. The shapes are often rotated, which makes it more difficult to determine if the shapes are the same. I am finding this game VERY challenging! Sometimes I feel like I'm figuring it out, and my scores are decent. Sometimes my scores are terrible and I'm frustrated. I did so much better previously, what is the problem? But I keep playing it. I don't want to give up. I can tell that when I'm tired I often don't do as well. It's not a good idea for me to play late at night, but that is often what I do. Still, I think the Training Center is a good way to use the app, because it makes me play games that are more difficult for me. You can skip a game if you want to, but it's better not to do that.

I spend too much time scrolling through Facebook. I need to use my time more time more wisely and productively. I need to be writing and reading more. I've also always wanted to learn sign language. That would be a very beneficial activity for my brain. I've also always wanted to learn how to play the piano. One of the hardest parts is to just start trying. Don't worry about failure. Don't think that you've wasted your time if you don't do well at something, or if you ultimately give up what you were trying to learn. Understand that the attempt was worth the time and effort. And you were doing something helpful for your brain, your mental health, and your overall health.

DWTS Double Elimination Nite 11/2

Except it's not double elimination night after all. I feel so bad for Jeannie. I enjoyed her as a contestant, but most of all I hope she is going to be okay. We will miss her in the ballroom.

Kaitlyn & Artem
Jive
Very solid routine! She is back! Good energy, good content, good kicks and flicks - I just wonder if Carrie Ann will ding them for the lift. But otherwise it was a strong routine. There wasn't anything unusual or super wow about it, but it was a good solid Jive.
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 9, 8

Nev & Jenna
Viennese Waltz
I love him! He is so refreshing. He looks both very professional and really joyous when he dances. And he looks like a leading man; he doesn't look like the student. That was a lovely dance. So elegant and refined.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Justina & Sasha
Samba
Yaaaaasssss! Viva Puerto Rico!! I love that song and I love Justina! Samba is the party dance, and it's often hard for contestants to really create a party atmosphere with their dancing and their energy level, but Justina totally did. And Sasha threw just about every bit of Samba content possible into that routine, even reverse turns, which are so tough. I don't know if she fell at the end, or if that was part of the routine, but she made it look like it was planned, so I'm going to go with that. I absolutely loved it and I did not want it to end. Muy caliente!
My score: 10 (oops Samba rolls, not reverse turns, my bad)
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Nelly & Daniella
Rhumba
By far Nelly's best dance! He came through when he needed to. He looked so handsome, so suave, his hip action was terrific. Daniella still did a lot of the work in the dance, But Nelly was not a passive bystander. He was a strong partner,, and they had wonderful chemistry and musicality. Great job Nelly!
My score: 9
Score: 7, 7, 7

Chrishell & Gleb
Viennese Waltz
Are they together? Seriously, their chemistry is ridiculous! I mean that was like sex in the ballroom. I need a cigarette after that routine. That was some serious passion and fire. How was their technique? I don't care. That routine wasn't about technique. That was all about emotion and connection, and if you didn't feel anything watching that, you must be an Android. Wow! Wow! That is also one of my favorite Rhianna songs.
My score: 10
Scores: 8, 8, 8
They're the judges. They focus on technique. I get to focus on the sexual energy. 😀

Skai & Alan
Salsa
Girl YAAASSS! No Robot Skai tonight! Whoo Whoo! That was both the most relaxed I've ever seen her and the most energetic I've ever seen her. She was feeling and living that song and that routine! Those lifts were sickening too! She is so tiny that Alan look like he was flinging around a rag doll. But I say that in a good way. It was a super exciting routine. I'm not sure how much salsa content there was, but it was awesome to watch.
My score: 10
Scores: 8, 9, 8
I can see their point about too many lifts. But I think the scores are too low tonight.

Johnny & Britt
Foxtrot
It's really petty, but I was terribly distracted by what I consider to be his horrible outfit. Having gotten that off my chest, I will say it was a lovely Foxtrot. I loved the musicality and the grandeur of the routine, the sweep across the floor. I especially loved the end. They have a wonderful partnership and friendship happening.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

AJ McLean & Cheryl
Rhumba
I think AJ has been quite consistent in this competition. For me, he hasn't been the best, but he certainly has not been the worst. I think the song choice was a little unusual. I really liked the song, but it did not seem to fit with a rumba. For the most part, I think it was a solid routine, although the main spin towards the end looked really off to me.
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

End of Round One

Relays

Carrie Ann judges a Cha Cha
Nev vs Chrishell vs Nelly
My pick: Nev & Jenna
They looked so professional!
Carrie Ann gave 3 points to Nev, 2 points to Chrishell, and 2 to Nelly

Derek judges a Viennese Waltz
Justina vs Johnny
Okay, sorry, but super unfair here. Johnny & Britt got way more time AND way better parts of the song. Justina & Sasha got the slower parts of the song, and the dance suffered because of it. It was much more obvious in this relay. They should have had the opportunity to dance to the same parts of the song. For this reason I have to give the edge to Johnny and Britt, but this relay dance was really unfair.
Derek gave 2 points to Justina and 3 points to Johnny

Bruno judges a Samba
AJ vs Kaitlyn vs Skai
This is a tough one! I thought they were all great, and equally so! I'll give the edge to Skai & Alan, but just by a smidge.
Bruno gave 3 points to AJ and Kaitlyn and 2 points to Skai

Bottom 2:
Skai & Alan

So sad. :(
But it makes me very happy to posting this recap immediately! It only took me how many years to figure out I needed to type directly into Blogger?

DWTS Villains Nite (Top 10) Part 2 10/26/20

Nelly & Daniella
Argentine Tango
I give Daniella a 10 for that routine and Nelly an 8. She did most of the work, but still, his partnering skills were good. I think her choreography made him look good, although I think I saw a balance problem or two. It was his best dance overall.
My score: 8 (almost 9)
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Justina & Sasha
Tango
Poor Sasha was probably exhausted and battered after that routine - but I'm sure it was worth it! Wow!! Great dance! Fast, powerful, with so many unexpected moments! I was on the edge of my seat! Her screams made me laugh out laugh out loud! Thrilling! The songs are so perfect for the themes tonight!
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 9, 8

Nev & Jenna
Paso Doble
Excellent Paso! Loved Nev's power and intensity, the look on his face said it all. Very strong Paso content - shaping, lines, attack - it was all there, and it all worked.
My score: 9
Scores: 10, 10, 10
Yay!!

Skai & Alan
Argentine Tango
It's a difficult dance, but Skai is back this week! Very good footwork, clean lines, and because she is so tiny, they were able to do some pretty incredible lifts. And the look on her face at the end was wonderfully sinister.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Kaitlyn and Artem
Paso Doble
So obviously I'm finishing this nearly a week late, and I did hear about the controversy surrounding this routine. I thought Kaitlyn did a good job acting the part, and the hair and costume were spot on. I thought she had a lot of attack in the beginning, and some very nice shapes. But I think the choreography hurt her towards the end of the dance. Artem had her going underneath him twice, and it's hard to get up from the floor in that likely heavy costume. So I blame the choreography more than anything else for the sluggishness at the end.
My score: 8 (almost a 9)
Scores: 7,9,8

Bottom 2:
Monica & Val
Jeannie & Brandon
Eliminated: Monica & Val
I am absolutely crushed. I think Monica was wonderful tonight. She did not deserve to go home. But neither did Jeannie.

Big Brother Finale - My Thoughts

Another season of Big Brother is over.

I am not surprised that Cody won, and I am not surprised that it was a unanimous vote. Cody deserved to win, he won on his own merits, but honestly, Enzo handed it to him on a silver platter. Enzo gave the worst speech and answers to jury questions in the history of Big Brother finales. Flat out admitting that you rode someone's coattails is going to get you a win? C'mon on! Further, Cody deserved a raise in prize money for dealing with Enzo during that final hour. Enzo was manic - pacing, non-stop talking, paranoid - painful to watch.

Nicole's reaction was painful too. I can understand her feeling betrayed by Cody, but she really believed that the jury was going to give her a second win? She thought people like Day, David, and Kevin were going to vote for her after she betrayed them? After she lied to Day's face? Nicole could not get her emotions under control and she came across as a spoiled brat. She is going to be in for a rude awakening when she finds out what much of America thinks of her. There is confidence and then there is delusion.

The best moment of the night for me was when Day won Favorite Houseguest. I was also happy to see Tyler in the running for that. I would have also liked to see Kevin get it, but I am thrilled for Day.

See you next summer Big Brother!

Big Brother Finale - Who is Going to Win?

The Big Brother All Stars season finale is about an hour and fifteen minutes away. Who will win and who deserves to win?

In my opinion, Cody deserves to win. That doesn't mean that he is my favorite. Of the three left in the house, Cody SHOULD win, and if he makes it to the final two, I believe he will win.

Right now, Nicole is in the driver's seat. If she wins the final HOH, she will be crazy to take Cody with her. Cody has never been on the block. He has been in multiple alliances and has made multiple deals, which can sometimes bite a contestant in the ass (I'm looking at you, Tyler) :) But in this case, I think these all-stars will reward Cody's game play.

Nicole will not win. She won't win because she has already won once. And she won't win because of what happened with Day and David. Day, David, and Kevin will not vote for her, and I don't think Tyler will either.

The only way Enzo will win is if he winds up in the final two against Nicole. Enzo has played a good social game, and he has won a few challenges. But he has not played a better game than Cody.

Who deserves to win America's Favorite Player? Honestly, I don't know. I liked so many of these contestants before this season. Now I don't like most of them for one reason or another. Red-haired Nicole is someone I still like, but she wasn't in the house long enough to win favorite player.

Anyway, I'll be watching. It was a controversial season, but I still want to see how this plays out.

DWTS Villains Nite (Top 10) Part 1 10/26/20

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I am not a Halloween fan. But here we go...

Jeannie & Brandon
Paso Robles
Wow that was a long routine! Now that there's only 10 contestants, and they probably can't do group dances, I expect the routines will be longer, which is nice. I wish the camera angles would have been as nice. I think she did a good job with the Paso. I like how they covered the floor with the dance. I liked her skirt work, and it was cool when she threw Brandon across the floor. I would have liked to have seen a little more attack, but overall it was a solid performance.
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 9, 8

Johnny & Britt
Viennese Waltz
Johnny is back!! Of course, I didn't think he did that badly last week. But he is definitely back with a vengeance this week. I don't usually think of a Viennese Waltz as full of attack, but this one was, but it was also passionate and beautiful with wonderful musicality. Absolutely stunning!!
My score: 10
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Chrishell & Gleb
Paso Doble
The contestants are really very good this season. This Paso was full of content and attack. She had some very good shaping and lines. I may not be a big fan of Halloween, but I did really like this choreography, it was exciting. And VA VA Voom with her costume!
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 8

Monica & Val
Jazz
GIRL YAAASSS!!!
Derek said it exactly right last week: when the contestant has fun, the audience has fun. And boy howdy, did Monica have fun with that routine!! Wow! That was hot, sizzling, smooth, I did not want that routine to end. I loved everything about it. Her movements were so sharp, and the way they matched perfectly with the music, oh my gosh, it was fantastic! She and Val have such amazing chemistry! That routine was fire! You could tell that Monica was feeling every bit of that character, and communicating it to the audience. So happy for her!
My score: 10
Scores: 7, 8, 7
Were we watching the same dance? I feel so bad for her. I think she thought she nailed it, and I thought she did too.

AJ & Cheryl
Tango
I think it was a strong Tango, but honestly I was a little bored. I think the music had something to do with it. The music was really fast, and at times the dance didn't quite keep up. Plus I think we were all holding our breath to make sure Cheryl didn't hit her head again.
My score: 8
Scores: 9, 8, 9

End of Part 1

DWTS Top 13

Nelly and Daniella
Paso Double
Movements matched well with the songs, but for me it was just steps more than dancing. The attack was there, but not the dancing. He seemed shocked by the positive comments.
My score: 6
Scores: 7,7,7

Chrishell & Gleb
Foxtrot
She won't be single for long.
The dance looked more like a rumba at times, but who cares. It was sexy, sophisticated, nice rise and fall, and she had major chemistry with Gleb
My score: 8
Scores: 7, 8, 7

Monica & Val
Samba
The lights almost gave me a seizure, but that was an exciting samba with a lot of content. She needed more fluidity and hip action, she's still a little stiff, but I continue to see potential.
My score: 7
Scores: 8,8,8

Anne & Keo
Paso Doble
I give Keo a 9.5 for that dance. Wow! He was fire and passion and all kinds of hotness. Anne has some moments that were strong, but some of her leg movements were weird. And what was that rainbow blanket / onesie she was wearing?
My score: 7
Scores: 7,7,7

Nev & Jenna
Rumba
That was wonderful! He had everything I look for in a rumba - sex appeal, hip action, fluidity, musicality, sophistication, and he was leading Jenna, not the other way around. Fantastic!
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Justina & Sasha
Salsa
I wish I could say in Spanish how hot and spicy that was. She is the frontrunner in my book. I absolutely adore how comfortable she is in the ballroom. That was so exciting and fun to watch. Loved the music, the outfits, everything. My only complaint is they didn't move as much around the floor.
My score: 9
Scores: 8,8,8

Kaitlyn & Artem
Viennese Waltz
Nice fluidity, good turns, but sometimes her arms were a little out of control. But lovely and romantic. I'd like to see her do a Latin dance.
My score: 8
Scores: 9, 8, 8
She got a 9 but not Nev or Justina? Mmmm

Johnny Weir & Britt
Jive
Very exciting Jive - he really went for it and looked very comfortable. Maybe a touch out of control at times, but I prefer that to a boring dance. Very good kicks and flicks
My score: 8
Scores: 8,8,8

Jeannie & Brandon
Tango
I love her humor and spirit. She was all about intensity and fierceness in this Tango, which made it so good, except for one part that her feet got messed up and then she wobbled on the end pose. Such a shame, because the rest was terrific. These dancers are bringing it tonight!
My score: 8
Scores: 7, 7, 7

Vernon & Peta
Rumba
Alright alright! Not as good as Nev's, but he got those hips going. He was moving and grooving. He showed off Peta nicely. He had one of the best songs to dance to also.
My score: 7 (almost an 8)
Scores: 8, 7, 7

Jesse & Sharna
Cha Cha
I don't know. I absolutely love Smooth by Santana, and I thought Sharna could make anyone look good, but he didn't have much rhythm - he looked awkward. His outfit was perfect, but his dancing wasn't.
My score: 6
Scores: 7, 7, 7

Skai & Alan
Foxtrot
It was dreamy, lyrical, and beautiful, and she is a wonderful dancer, but I also wanted more. There were too many poses and took them too long to start dancing.
My score: 8
Scores: 10, 9, 9

AJ McLean & Cheryl
Cha Cha
It was a crisp, clean cha cha, but the BB breakdown was unnecessary in a dance that was already short
My score: 7
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Bottom 2
Monica & Val
Anne & Keo
Anne & Keo eliminated
What a mess that bottom 2 announcement was! That has never happened on this show. I feel so bad for Monica and Val but so relieved that they were saved.

DWTS 80's Nite Recap (Top 12)

Justina & Sasha
Jazz
So great! I LOVE her! That is a very energetic song, and she kept up the pace! She has such good musicality - loved the choreography, all the flash dance elements, and the water at the end - plus her spitting it out - pure comedy!
Sasha's outfit - SO Richard Simmons!
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Jesse & Sharna
Tango
I'm sorry, he's just not a dancer. That was so robotic. There was no musicality, no connection to the awesome Tears for the Fears song, or to the dance, or to Sharna. I didn't feel a darn thing. His sexy look and smile at the end were the one redeeming thing.
My score: 6
Scores: 7, 6, 6

Chrishell & Gleb
Cha Cha
NKOTB
Really cute. She was so excited to dance to a NKOTB song. Her timing wasn't the best, but she and Gleb have mad chemistry. I liked how they worked the NKOTB steps in, but the Cha Cha elements were very basic.
My score: 7
Scores: 6, 6, 7
Her reaction to the video was something every fan girl understands

Jeannie & Brandon
Jazz
Madonna "Like a Virgin"
Jeannie is back! What a fun routine! Her look was on point, her moves were sharp, and the tricks were super exciting. I know she's pretty tiny, but Brandon's above the head lift was still impressive. Loved it! If she had rolled around on the floor I might have given her a 10.
My score: 9
Scores: 8,8,8

Monica & Val
Tango
Tainted Love
Pow! Take that, bottom two!! Absolutely loved the intensity and passion in that dance! The choreography was perfect with the song. I still think this is a couple to watch. Monica is not someone who settles for average. She is a fighter.
My score: 8 (almost 9)
Scores: 9,9,8

AJ McLean & Cheryl
Waltz
Journey Open Arms
I thought maybe there was an odd step or two, but overall it was lovely - light, airy, and made more exciting by some excellent camera work. I agree with Derek - at least some of the dancers are covering the floor more, which I like. The end with the crown and tiara were precious
My score: 8
Scores: 8,8,8

Skai & Alan
Jazz
The Power of Love - Huey Lewis
Again, she's a tiny little thing, so that makes lifts easier, but they were still exciting, but I also thought they could have been cleaner. She has great energy and really sparkles, but I think they could have done even more with that routine.
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Vernon & Peta
Tango
Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
Not terrible, but kind of sloppy. Monica's was much better. This lacked precision and musicality. He was a little robotic at times.
My score: 7
Scores: 7, 7, 7
He does look like Ashford!

Kaitlyn & Artem
Tango
Tiffany
Odd song choice and styling for a Tango and the B-boy elements at the end were so out of place with the style of the dance - I don't know. She was good but not as good this week. She seemed a little off.
My score: 8
Scores: 9, 9, 9
Am I becoming Len?

Nelly and Daniella
Samba
El Debarge - Rhythm of the Night
Yes Nelly! I saw improvement! He got those hips going! Wasn't as down and dirty as he needed to be, I still want him to have more fluidity and musicality, but he's getting there!
My score: 8
Scores: 8,8,8

Johnny & Britt
Contemporary
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
Okay, the lighting was horrible - I couldn't see part of the routine. But what I did see was lovely. They had good connection and Johnny's partnering skills were strong. The lifts were very nice. My complaint is that for a contemporary piece they were apart quite a bit. But it was lovely. Felt like a skating routine
My score: 8 (almost a 9)
Scores: 10, 10, 9
Happy to be wrong!

Nev & Jenna
Quickstep
Take on Me Aha
Really fun choreography. I love his spirit. For me it was a strong Quickstep, but there wasn't anything unique or especially exciting, but solid.
My score: 8
Scores: 8, 9, 9

Bottom 2:
Vernon & Peta
Jesse & Sharna
Eliminated: Jesse & Sharna
For me, that was the right bottom two, and it was time for Jesse to go.

DWTS Recap Top 11 Part 2 10/19/20

Jeannie & Brandon
Rumba
No tricks, no humor, no sass - simply a beautiful Rumba that was anything but simple. Jeannie looked STUNNING, and there was a tender vulnerability to her performance that mirrored her backstory, but her moves were nuanced, sensual, and on point. Gorgeous choreography by Brendon.
My score: 9
Scores: They didn't show her scores!! WTH? I only know she got a 25, so I'm assuming 8's from Carrie Ann and Derek and a 9 from Bruno

AJ & Cheryl
Samba
Not to take anything away from AJ, but I think that song could get a lot of people moving on a dance floor. AJ did get the party started. His movements were sharp and clean; he was down and dirty like a Samba should be. I liked the shoulder moves, but maybe the judges won't.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Chrishell & Gleb
Contemporary
The passion and musicality were absolutely wonderful in this routine, but what stood out the most was the trust in this partnership - the lifts, the rollover, and especially the leap off the stairs. Chrishell is a lovely dancer and I have appreciated how much she has shared of her life with the audience.
My score: 9
Scores: 8, 8, 8

Kaitlyn & Artem
Samba
Kaitlyn's Samba was likely better than AJ's on a technical level, but I enjoyed AJ's more, maybe because of the song. Plus I was distracted by Artem's tight, somewhat high water pants. Anyway, Kaitlyn had the look of a Latin ballroom dancer, with her long hair and sexy dress, and there was a good amount of Samba content.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Justina & Sasha
Viennese Waltz
To me she is still a front-runner, even though she doesn't get the highest scores. This was a beautiful Waltz. Although I didn't love her outfit, I think the skirt made her turns look even better than they already were. It was an elegant, sophisticated dance.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Bottom 2
Johnny & Britt
Vernon & Peta
WTH, Johnny?!?!
Thank goodness the judges saved him and Britt. And by judges I mean Derek and Bruno. Shake it off Johnny! Come back strong!

DWTS Top 11 Part 1 10/19/20

I'm going to try something new tonight since I'm so far behind on my recaps. For the first time I'm going to try recapping directly into blogger, and also using the built-in text-to-speech feature on my phone. Let's see how this goes. Either way, accessibility rocks!

Johnny & Britt
Salsa
The lifts in the routine were really cool and innovative. I was annoyed by the flashing lights, because it makes it hard to see the dancers. But what I was able to see looked good. Johnny was moving his hips and is partnering skills were good. He looked like he was having a blast out there.
My score: 9
Scores: 7, 8, 7

Nev & Jenna
Jazz
What a tease that Nev is! The whole dance I thought he was going to rip his shirt open! Anyway, great routine, very exciting lifts and lots of energy. Almost a top score, but I wanted the flow of movement to be smoother. Fantastic song to dance to!
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 8

Monica & Val
Rumba
First of all, Monica looked STUNNING! Gorgeous dress, hair and makeup were perfect! And that was a beautiful rumba, sexy, graceful, lovely hip action - I'm telling you, Monica & Val could take this competition.
My score: 9
Scores: 9, 9, 9

Skai & Alan
Cha Cha
I thought the costumes were a little odd. I guess Skai was paying homage to Nikki Minaj, but I don't know why Alan was in a zebra jumpsuit. Anyway, oh gosh, I don't know. Skai is a very good dancer. The steps are there. The moves are there. But the feeling wasn't there. I felt like I was watching a robot Barbie. And I think there were a few missteps too. Maybe she's trying too hard?
My score: 8
Scores: 6, 6, 6
Whoa!!

Vernon & Peta
Cha Cha
Tonight we've seen two good dancers falter. With Vernon, I'm just not seeing any growth. He's not a terrible dancer. But he's not much of a dancer. He lets Peta lead him. He doesn't have much timing or musicality. He has a move here or there, but that's not enough to sustain him in this competition.
My score: 7
Scores: 7, 7, 7

Nelly and Daniella
Viennese Waltz
I thought Nelly did pretty well with a ballroom dance, and I think it was his first non Latin dance. The judges may not like his arm movements, but I thought they were kind of nice, as were the turns. I thought the dance kind of fizzled out at the end, but overall it was rather sweet, although also rather simple.
My score: 7
Scores: 8, 8, 8

End of Part 1

Quote about Trying

This is why I still go to Facebook, to find gems like this.

I needed to see this today.
There are days when this is all we can manage.
And that's okay.
Tomorrow will hopefully be better.
And even today had it's bright spots.

Staying Positive

Find a way to be positive every day.

There are days when everything seems to go wrong and finding a silver lining seems impossible.

Reach down, look carefully, and find something to be grateful for.

It can be done.

Yesterday was a bad day.

Computer problems.

The can opener died.

I struggled with focus and productivity.

I let stress get to me.

But I found some gratefulness.

And I re-directed.

I took a walk outside.

I did my other exercises.

I ate and hydrated.

I got a handle on the stress.

Life felt better.

I felt stronger.

Gratefulness is one of the most powerful weapons you have against stress and negativity.

Nurture gratefulness.

I urge you to find time every day for gratitude.

It can change your life.

"Dancing with the Stars" 2020 Nite 2 Recap Part 2

Chrishelle & Gleb

Rumba

Her story was compelling, and she was brave to tell it. Her Rumba was very strong, powerful, sexy, a little fast, but good hip action. She looked stunning in that purple dress, and she and Gleb were H-O-T. Quite a fiery Rumba; I was impressed.

Carrie Ann - deep connection

Derek - so confident, passionate

Bruno - bombshell; I'm impressed

Scores: 6,6,6,                My score: 7

Charles & Emma

Cha Cha

Does he have hips? If he has them, does he know how to use them? Do they move at all? Still, I love his positive attitude. He did have more energy this week, but I really didn't see any Cha Cha from him. I got excited at the beginning of the routine, and that it was going to be much better than last week, but alas, I was wrong.

Derek - timing was better

Bruno - thank you for the chili

Carrie Ann - watch your focus

Scores: 5,5,5            My score: 5

Jesse & Sharna

Foxtrot

At times I thought his frame was good and at times I thought it was a train wreck. I wasn't loving the Saturday Night Fever outfit on him either. But he does have good chemistry with Sharna. I still see potential here. Maybe.

Bruno - watch your bum and posture

Carrie Ann - I disagree

Derek - good job

Scores: 7,7,6            My score: 6

Jeannie & Brandon

Cha Cha

OMG her mom! Is she serious? Sometimes the camera is too far away with these dances! So irritating! I miss her tricks from last week, but it was a good Cha Cha. Not outstanding, not especially memorable unfortunately. But she is still sassy, cute, and fun to watch.

Carrie Ann - what an improvement

Derek - I like your energy

Bruno - sexy and sparkling

Scores: 6,6,6            My score: 6

Carole & Pasha

Viennese Waltz

Oh Jeez, another tiger-themed song?! And with that over-the-top, Marie Antoinette-inspired set? How are we supposed to take her seriously? Having said that, it wasn't a terrible Viennese Waltz. It was simple, generic, unremarkable except for the song and set, but it wasn't a train wreck like last week.

Derek - big improvement

Bruno - performance was shining

Carrie Ann - I liked it

Scores: 6,5,5            My score: 5

Vernon & Peta

Paso Doble

I love the music tonight!! I liked the attack of the dance, and he had some nice shapes, but he was also a little all over the place - at times too wild, sometimes too robotic - so it was uneven, but exciting at times.

Bruno - new bull on the block

Derek - work on shaping

Carrie Ann - you corrected yourself

Scores: 6,6,6            My score: 6

Kaitlynne & Artem

Foxtrot

If her ankle was hurting, she didn't let on - The show must go on, and she did! That was a beautiful dance - lovely musicality, gorgeous rise and fall, great movement across the floor, wonderful turns. I loved it!

Carrie Ann - beautiful, elegant

Derek - graceful, effortless

Bruno - quality of movement

Scores - 7,8,7            My score: 7 (almost an 8!)

Bottom 2:

Carole & Pasha and Charles & Emma

Charles & Emma were eliminated

It was the right bottom 2, and I think the judges made the right decision.

In summary, I'm happy that the show is back, but I hope the producers can work on the pace. The dances are very short, and the judges comments and scores are exceedingly rushed. Tyra is constantly telling them to hurry up, that the show is running behind. I know there are a lot of dancers this season, so hopefully as some are eliminated the pace won't be so hectic. And please work on the camera angles too!

"Dancing with the Stars" 2020 Nite 2 Recap Part 1

 Here we go, dance fans!

Nev & Jenna

Cha Cha

He did so well with the Foxtrot, but I wasn't sure if he would do as well with a Latin dance. I think he did pretty good! He sure gave it his all. He really went for it. I loved his big smile and bold costume. He may have been scared on the inside but he didn't let it show. I thought he had good extension and nice flare.

Derek - solid performance, watch your shoulders

Bruno - showmanship, presentation

Carrie Ann - you impressed me, nice extension (that's what I said!) :)

Scores: 7, 7, 7            My score: 6

Skai & Alan

Samba

What a shame that the lift went so wrong. I still think she is absolutely a front runner, but overall I was disappointed with this dance. It felt like she was just doing the moves, but she wasn't feeling anything. She was like a Samba robot doll. There was no joy or musicality, no Samba party going on. She was just going through the motions. Maybe she got thrown off by the lift mishap? Shake it off, Skai, you've got this, girl!

Bruno - thinks happen, but I believe in you!

Carrie Ann - work on your arms

Derek - setback sets you up for a comeback (great quote!), get more grounded

Scores: 5, 5, 5            My score: 6

Johnny & Britt

Tango

Johnny and Gaga are usually an awesome combination. But again, I was left wanting more. Are my expectations too high from last week? The steps seemed precise, but I wanted more sharpness, more attack. And the dance seemed so short. I felt like there was something missing. It should have been memorable, but I think the only thing I will remember are Johnny's pants.

Carrie Ann - footwork is a bit odd

Derek - work on frame

Bruno - more staccato

Scores: 6, 6, 6            My score: 6

Justina & Sasha

Foxtrot

There we go! Thank you for bringing the magic back, Justina! That was a dream of a dance! Light, airy, floating, wonderful musicality! She looked beautiful! That dip at the end was exquisite!

Derek - natural, beautiful dancer

Bruno - You make me happy

Carrie Ann - I was transported

Scores: 7,7,7             My score: 8

Monica & Val

Jive

Again, these dances are SO short! They needed to cut out the gimmicky stuff with the hay bale at the beginning and get to the dancing. I sound like Len, right? Because what she did was pretty good - nice kicks and flicks, decent bounce, but she was a little stiff, a little tight. Also, I would have styled her differently. I'm all for her looking youthful, but the Pink Lady high school look didn't suit her.

Bruno - cheerleader quality helped, but timing not quite there

Carrie Ann - more relaxed but didn't need the lift

Derek - fun, playful

Scores: 5, 6, 5            My score: 6

AJ & Cheryl

Foxtrot

That was a very jazzy Foxtrot, or something. Really unusual moves, which made it more memorable, but what will the judges think? Will they be impressed, or will they be scandalized and unleash their inner Len on him? It seemed kind of jarring to me. But his frame was good in the traditional Foxtrot moments. I am conflicted about this one. I do love the song. This felt like something Mark Ballas would have choreographed.

Carrie Ann - smooth as silk

Derek - showman

Bruno - foxtrotting down to Vegas, but too choppy

Scores: 7, 6, 6            My score: 6

Anne & Keo

Foxtrot

Great choreography, and she looked like Old Hollywood glamour. The pace of the dance was just a hair slower than the music at times, but her frame and extension were good. Solid performance overall, and I really like their chemistry.

Derek - too much energy on top

Bruno - swept away, lots of Foxtrot content

Carrie Ann - nice trust with Keo

Scores: 6, 6, 6            My score: 6

Nelly & Daniella

Cha Cha

I almost felt it! Damn! But to me, it was a Cha Cha / Disco by numbers routine. Step here. Throw your arms in the air here. Roll your hips here. He's a performer, an entertainer. But he was too stiff. He wasn't feeling the music. He was just doing the steps.

Bruno - timing was good, but you need to articulate

Carrie Ann - work on your turns

Derek - timing is impeccable, good content

Scores: 6, 6, 6            My score: 6

End of Part 1
